Position: Humanities Teacher

Grades 9-12

Humanities Teacher Responsibilities

Stamford Big Picture Learning seeks to fill a high school humanities teaching position using the school-approved curriculum to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to achieve proficiency in accordance with Connecticut's Core Standards.

The teacher will be assigned to teach Humanities courses and must be comfortable instructing students in core skills and conceptual understanding, using real-world applications and hands-on experiences to help content come to life.

The teacher will maintain an emphasis on the instruction of academic disciplines that explore human experience, such as literature, history, philosophy, art, and languages. The teacher will focus on cultivating critical thinking, empathy, and cultural awareness by examining how humans have documented and made sense of the world throughout history.

Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• teaching the school approved curriculum
• promptly reporting to classes at the location and times designated by the principal
• planning and executing lessons that meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students
• using data to drive instruction and intervention strategies
• creating a strong, positive learning environment in alignment with the school mission and model
• maintaining appropriate records of student work, grades, and progress in accordance with school-approved systems and routines
• communicating with students and parents/guardians regarding the course and instruction, always using a professional manner
• providing necessary modifications and accommodations for students with special educational needs, in accordance with individual plans
• collaborating with colleagues and working with the school as a team to deliver a high-quality experience for every student
• participating in school events, occasionally outside normal working hours
• attending professional development sessions and implementing prioritized strategies and techniques in the classroom
• participating in school committees, and attending faculty meetings
• supporting the general operations of the school by fulfilling other duties from time to time, as assigned by the principal

Qualifications

• All employees of the school must be fingerprinted and cleared to work prior to the start date
• bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred
• valid Connecticut teaching certification; candidates in the process of obtaining certification will be considered
• firm grasp of the subject matter
• strong instructional and classroom management skills
• experience working with high school students; two years of teaching experience strongly preferred

Teaching salaries in Connecticut generally range from $50,000-$90,000; the salary will be commensurate with experience, degree and certification status, and other factors. SBPLA offers a generous benefits package.
