Job Description:
Fishers Island School Fishers Island, NY | www.fischool.com
1.0 FTE Mathematics Teacher, Grades 7-12
Start Date: August 31, 2026 Location: Fishers Island School, Fishers Island, New York
About the Role
Fishers Island School is seeking a passionate and adaptable mathematics educator to serve as our sole 7-12 math teacher. This is a rare opportunity for a creative, ambitious teacher to design and own a complete secondary mathematics program - shaping the mathematical experience of every middle and high school student in our close-knit island community.
The successful candidate will be both a classroom teacher and a curriculum architect: building a vertically aligned, NY State-aligned program from grade 7 through senior-year electives, while differentiating instruction within each class to meet the needs of students across a wide range of abilities, interests, and post-graduation goals. With small class sizes - often fewer than five to ten students per section - this role offers the autonomy of independent school teaching with the mission and stability of a NY State public school.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching across the 7-12 continuum
- Teach all secondary mathematics courses, including General Math (grades 7-8), Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Statistics, with the possibility of additional coursework based on student need and teacher expertise
- Plan, deliver, and assess instruction across multiple preps daily, often with mixed-ability groupings within a single section
- Differentiate instruction within every class - designing scaffolded entry points, extension tasks, and varied modes of practice so that students working below, at, and above grade level can all engage meaningfully with the same core concepts
Curriculum design and ownership
- Develop, document, and continuously refine a coherent 7-12 mathematics curriculum fully aligned with the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards
- Build vertical alignment across grade levels so concepts, vocabulary, and skills progress logically from middle school through senior-year coursework
- Select, adapt, and evaluate curricular materials, instructional resources, and assessments - including digital tools and mathematical software - to fit our students and setting
Classroom culture and student investment
- Build a classroom culture in which students genuinely enjoy mathematics, embrace productive struggle, and take ownership of their own learning
- Motivate students to reason critically, communicate mathematical thinking clearly, and persist through challenge
- Help students set personal learning goals, monitor their own progress, and develop the study habits and self-advocacy they will carry into college and careers
- Develop strong, communicative relationships with families and contribute actively to school culture
Professional growth and school community
- Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines on interdisciplinary projects, advisory, and schoolwide initiatives
- Model lifelong learning by continuously refining instructional practice and pursuing relevant professional development
- Contribute to the broader life of the school and the Fishers Island community
Qualifications
- Eligibility for NY State Certification as a Mathematics Teacher, Grades 7-12
- Strong content knowledge across the full 7-12 mathematics sequence, including statistics and pre-calculus
- Demonstrated ability (or clear potential) to differentiate instruction for students with a wide range of mathematical backgrounds and abilities
What We Offer
- Highly competitive salary and benefits per the teacher contract
- On-island housing is available, subject to availability
- Small class sizes and a personalized, student-centered school culture
- The autonomy to build a mathematics program you believe in, with the support of a collaborative faculty and administration
- A unique living and teaching experience in one of the most distinctive communities in New York State
