Job Description:
The Elementary School Library Media Specialist serves as a teacher, information specialist, and program administrator who fosters a culture of literacy, inquiry, creativity, and lifelong learning. The Media Specialist provides direct instruction to students in information literacy, research skills, media literacy, and digital citizenship while ensuring students and staff have access to high-quality print and digital resources. Through effective management of the library media program, the Media Specialist supports student achievement and promotes a love of reading and learning.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide engaging library instruction that develops students research, critical thinking, information literacy, and responsible technology-use skills.
- Promote literacy and a lifelong love of reading through library programming, literature appreciation, and student-centered learning experiences.
- Support teachers and students by identifying and utilizing instructional resources that enhance teaching and learning.
- Collaborate closely with the Teacher of Technology to support the integration of technology, digital literacy, innovation, and critical thinking across grade levels.
- Assist in the development and implementation of Maker Space experiences that encourage creativity, problem-solving, design thinking, engineering, coding, and hands-on learning opportunities for students.
- Select, acquire, and maintain a diverse, high-quality collection of print, multimedia, and digital resources that support the curriculum and reflect the diverse backgrounds of the student body.
- Ensure equitable access to resources that reflect and celebrate the backgrounds, experiences, and identities of all students.
- Manage the daily operations of the library media center, including circulation, scheduling, record keeping, and budget oversight.
- Coordinate schoolwide literacy initiatives, reading events, author visits, and programs that promote student engagement with reading and learning.
- Maintain a welcoming, organized, inclusive, and innovative learning environment for students and staff.
- Stay current with developments in childrens literature, library science, information literacy, educational technology, and emerging learning opportunities that support student creativity and innovation.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other educational materials
- Establish and maintain professional relationships
- Participate in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve instructional practice and positively affect student achievement.
Qualifications/Certificates:
- PREFERRED Certification: CT Certification (062) School Library Media Specialist or Elementary (305, 113, 116) with library science degree or related coursework toward LMS degree
- MINIMUM Certification: Elementary (305)
- Experience working with a diverse student demographic
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
