The Wethersfield District has an opening for a .4 FTE Chorus Teacher at Silas Deane Middle School under the direction of the school administration. This teacher will be responsible for providing a student-centered learning environment to students as well as overseeing the instruction, materials, and implementation of the curriculum.

Start Date: August 17, 2026 (start of 2026-2027 school year)

Compensation: $57,847 - $114,618 (full time annual - adjusted for part-time status)

Silas Deane Middle School is seeking a passionate and innovative Choral Teacher dedicated to creating a highly engaging learning environment that aligns with our Vision of the Graduate skills-Communicator, Problem-Solver, and Collaborator-equipping students for success in an ever-evolving world. The ideal candidate will create an engaging, student-centered learning environment that promotes the independence of each student as a learner, effectively assess student needs and progress, and plan instruction to achieve meaningful learning objectives, including those tailored for exceptional learners. The ideal candidate will accomplish these goals through effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues and by utilizing engaging, inquiry-based techniques and materials in a supportive and dynamic classroom environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach students the foundations and fundamental principles of music in accordance with the National and Connecticut State Standards, the Wethersfield Public Schools Music Curriculum, and Charlotte Danielson's The Framework for Teaching: Evaluation Instrument;
  • Teach choral singing, music notation, and music reading and listening skills;
  • Develop lesson plans and organize/manage class time to provide a balanced program of preparation, instruction and rehearsal;
  • Utilize a variety of instructional techniques commensurate with age, interest, and skill;
  • Coordinate and direct choral performances and concerts;
  • Provide students the freedom to explore and express themselves musically;
  • Manage classroom behavior and employ positive behavior practices to drive culture/climate;
  • Maintain and care for any school-owned musical property;
  • Collaborate with music and performing arts colleagues at SDMS and throughout the Wethersfield Public Schools in district initiatives and performances.
  • Regularly communicate with parents and school staff regarding individual student progress.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree is preferred, but not required

  • Appropriate CT Certification credentials (049 certification);

  • Exemplary communication skills to be used when:

  • Teaching and meeting with students, parents, families, and staff;

  • Writing formal and informal letters, messages, plans, and comments;

  • Collaborating with students, parents, families, and staff to organize and implement all school-wide music performances and various assemblies

  • Proven musicianship skills in vocal performance;

  • Ability to choose age-appropriate repertoire, culturally responsive repertoire;

  • Ability to plan and organize work schedule and set priorities and work independently and with a sense of urgency;

  • Excellent classroom management skills with both small and large groups;

  • Ability to handle and treat the information confidentially.
