    SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

    General Scope of Responsibility

    Under the general supervision of the School Principal and/or designee, to maximize the learning experience of students with special needs, in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living by implementing, district approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress/activities, outcomes, addressing students' specific needs, providing a safe and optimal learning environment.

    Relationship Within the Organization

    The Special Education Teacher is directly responsible to the Director of Special Education.

    Specific Responsibilities

    • Supports ISAAC's Core Values and Beliefs About Learning and the Vision of the Graduate
    • Conducts assessments, testing and diagnostic examinations of students for the purpose of identifying learning issues, and recommending courses of action or corrective procedures to overcome issues and maximize learning.
    • Provide reading services and interventions aligned with Wilson standards and expectations to students individually and in small groups
    • Participates in PPTs and assists in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for students.
    • Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students' progress and goals
    • Assists students and teaching staff in implementing students IEPs and behavior management plans.
    • Coordinates with administrators and other teaching staff members to ascertain individual students abilities and needs, including students with special needs, and to familiarize stakeholders with social work services.
    • Serves as a ready resource to students and parents to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management; serves as liaison between home and school.
    • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research, and by maintaining professional relationships with members of institutions of higher learning and the business community
    • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and providing student information to prospective colleges and employers, as required by district procedures and applicable laws
    • Encourages parental involvement in students education and ensures effective communication with students and parents
    • Responsible for all case managing responsibilities associated with the assigned group of students
    • Conduct academic and transitional evaluations, teach students to facilitate or participate in their PPT meetings.
    • Adapt, and collaborate with teachers to adapt, lessons to meet the needs of special education students
    • Develop transition plans that outline services to help students as they graduate and move to a new school
    • Meet with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators to discuss students' progress
    • Supervise paraprofessionals to ensure that they have the skills and information necessary to work with students
    • Ensure the school comply with requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
    • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Principal and/or Executive Director

    Desirable Experience and Training

    • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment
    • Master's Degree in Special Education preferred
    • Current Connecticut certification in Special Education (065, 165, or 265) Certification as a Special Education Teacher or eligibility for Charter School Permit
    • Classroom teaching experience and proven record of high achievement with elementary or middle school students preferred
