JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Cleaner (Grade V)
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the
knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Must have a minimum of one (1) year of applicable experience in related field of work and
knowledge of housekeeping materials and standard practices necessary to maintain his/her
assigned area in an orderly manner as outlined hereafter.
- Requires general knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in
custodial care and routine facilities management.
- Requires thorough knowledge of the buildings and grounds of the assigned site.
- Must have a good knowledge of work hazards and safety procedures.
- Must be able to read, write and verbalize work related direction and instruction with sufficient
skill to perform his/her job responsibilities effectively as well as to show an ability to follow
verbal and/or written instructions. Must be able to understand MSDS Sheets.
- Must meet physical qualifications to satisfactorily perform all job-related tasks on a regular
and consistent basis as well as assist in school grounds work, snow and ice removal (as
applicable)
- Must be able to respond to emergencies within areas of responsibility or as assigned by
Administrative personnel on site (Principal, Assistant Principal, Head Custodian, District
Operations Personnel etc) both during assigned shift or off duty if called
- Must possess or be willing to obtain, at the direction of the Board of Education, a current
N.J. Black Seal Boiler Operators License (at the employee's expense).
- Must assist in maintaining inventories of custodial and school supplies (as applicable)
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities in a highly transactional, fast-paced
environment.
- Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.
- Proven ability to communicate and work with people in a teamwork environment.
REPORTS TO: Head Custodian/Operations Supervisor, Lead Cleaner and/or his/her designee
EVALUATION PROCESS: In accordance with State of New Jersey requirements and the policies
and procedures as approved by the Cherry Hill Board of Education.
SUMMARY: To maintain cleanliness and condition of assigned areas/building to a high standard
of cleanliness and to provide a desirable physician environment for all persons in the building.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve (12) month calendar; terms and conditions of employment as
set forth in the collective bargaining agreement between the Board and the Cherry Hill Supportive
Staff Association.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other related duties may be
assigned at any time.
- Responsible for maintaining assigned area in a user-ready fashion and referring situations
requiring assistance or the involvement of other staff/departments to the Head Custodian as
appropriate.
- Sweeps, scrubs, mops, washes and polishes floors throughout assigned building including
cafeteria, gymnasium, stairway/stairwell and halls.
- Washes windows, counters, and walls as directed.
- Vacuums rugs and carpets.
- Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork.
- Cleans chalk boards and erasers, empties pencil sharpeners.
- Maintains and makes minor repairs to building and fixtures.
- Reports other repair and maintenance needs and assists others in making repairs.
- Cleans, scrubs and disinfects restrooms. Polishes metalwork, clean sinks, mirrors and other
restroom fixtures. Maintains various classroom and restroom supplies including paper towels,
soap, toilet paper, and related items.
- Empties and cleans waste receptacles. Picks up paper. Picks up trash containers and empties
into large bins.
- Moves furniture and equipment as specified for optimum utilization of space.
- Sets up meeting rooms, classrooms and other school facilities for special meetings and events.
Sets up equipment for athletic events.
- Clean/disinfect kitchen and eating areas.
- Cleans drinking fountains and other facilities systems, devices and equipment as directed.
- Makes emergency cleanup in cafeteria area and other areas as necessary.
- Check doors, windows and other assigned areas for vandalism.
- Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards.
- Report all items in need of repair or replacement (e.g., hardware, shades, glass, locks, electrical
fixtures, etc.).
- Perform special duties (e.g., shoveling snow, mopping water, painting etc.) as necessary.
- Secure all windows, doors and ensure the overall security of the facility at the end of the shift
assigned. In addition, ensure that all unnecessary lights are turned off.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The duties of this job require the following physical activities: walking, sitting, standing, reaching,
pulling and/or pushing, carrying, repetitive motions, speaking, listening, and visual acuity. In
addition, the individual must be able to read, count, write, operate and use appropriate equipment,
climb ladders, and lift merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds. The physical demands described
here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in a normal Facilities department setting with some exposure to health or safety
hazards. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions
prevalent at the time. The noise level in the school environment is usually moderate.
