Are you someone who takes pride in creating clean, welcoming spaces and enjoys being part of a supportive team?
About us
The Science Museum Group is home to the Science Museum in London, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, Locomotion in Shildon and the National Railway Museum in York. Together, we share a mission to inspire futures, caring for world-class collections and welcoming millions of visitors every year.
About the role
Our House Services team plays a vital role in ensuring that every visitor, volunteer and colleague enjoys a safe, clean and welcoming environment.
We're looking for a Cleaner to join the team at the National Railway Museum in York. Working across public galleries, visitor facilities and office spaces, you'll help maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the museum, supporting a world-class visitor experience for the more than one million people who visit us each year.
This is a hands-on role where no two days are quite the same. You'll work as part of a close-knit team carrying out scheduled cleaning tasks, helping to maintain museum spaces and supporting the wider operation of the museum. You'll also assist with the careful cleaning and dusting of collection displays and follow agreed health and safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for everyone.
Previous commercial or domestic cleaning experience isn't essential, as full training will be provided. We're looking for people with the right attitude who take pride in doing a great job and enjoy working as part of a team.
This is a permanent, part-time role working 21 hours per week based at the National Railway Museum in York. The position operates on a two-week working pattern, with shifts across 10 days out of every 14, including one weekend. Working hours are 07:00 to 11:00 on weekdays and 07:00 to 12:00 at weekends.
About you
We're keen to hear from people who take pride in delivering high standards and enjoy working in a role where attention to detail really matters.
You'll be reliable, punctual and able to work effectively to a schedule, while also being flexible and willing to support colleagues when needed. You'll enjoy being part of a team and bring a positive approach to your work, helping to create an excellent experience for everyone who visits or works at the museum.
Experience in commercial or domestic cleaning would be beneficial, as would experience using cleaning equipment such as scrubber dryers, but these aren't essential requirements. Full training will be provided.
Above all, you'll share our commitment to creating an open and inclusive organisation where everyone feels welcome and valued.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
