Management

  • Lead the interviewing and selection process for staff within the Medical-Surgical Unit.
  • Provide leadership and direction aligned with organizational and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Support professional growth and development of patient care staff by identifying educational needs, organizing in-services, and promoting continuing education.
  • Plan and maintain effective staffing patterns to ensure continuity and appropriate levels of care for patients.
  • Oversee and maintain performance improvement initiatives within the department.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for staff and collaborate with other hospital departments to support patient care.
  • Promote positive public relations for the Medical-Surgical Unit and the hospital.

Patient Care

  • Administer medications accurately based on the patient’s clinical condition, age, and weight, adhering to the five rights of medication safety to minimize errors.
  • Perform thorough head-to-toe assessments and reassessments in accordance with policy.
  • Assess and manage pain using appropriate techniques; educate patients and families on pain management strategies.
  • Deliver patient care in a safe environment that minimizes the risk of medical and healthcare errors.
  • Develop individualized plans of care, revise based on treatment response, and evaluate daily for effectiveness.
  • Create and implement teaching plans based on identified family learning needs; assess the effectiveness of education provided.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure an interdisciplinary approach to patient care and support performance improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate and supervise patient care activities as needed to ensure continuity and quality.
  • Provide age-appropriate care for patients in the medical-surgical and telemetry units.
  • Treat patients and families with respect and dignity, addressing psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs.
  • Engage professionally with patients and families, involving them in care planning and decision-making.
  • Communicate clearly and appropriately with physicians, staff, nurse executives, and the administrative team.
  • Assist physicians with procedures in both the Medical-Surgical and Telemetry Units.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and the ability to function effectively under stress.
  • Maintain positive working relationships within the department and across hospital units.
  • Maintain clinical competency in stroke care; complete ongoing education and required stroke-related competencies.
  • Serve as a hospital-wide resource for stroke care, regardless of the patient’s admitting diagnosis.
  • Manage and coordinate stroke patient care throughout hospitalization and post-discharge.
  • Ensure documentation meets current standards and complies with hospital policies.

Safety Practices

  • Responsible for the safety and comfort of the patients, families, visitors and staff.
  • Promotion of a culture of patient safety which resulted in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices.
  • Utilization of Culture of Safety survey responses in improvement efforts.
  • Identification of risks and hazards to patients through various risk assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm.
  • Improvement in medication safety practices, including increased reporting of adverse drug events and improved compliance with the medication reconciliation process
  • Decreased, hospital-acquired infections and improved compliance with infection control practices (including hand hygiene)
  • Decreased hospital acquired conditions such as complications associated with ventilator use and pressure ulcers, through improved compliance with patient safety bundles and/or other formal performance improvement programs.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in Nursing units- Preferred
