Summary:
The HUP Emergency Medicine Department is looking for a full-time clinical documentation/revenue cycle lead to join the team!
- The Clinical Documentation & Revenue Cycle Lead serves as a senior subject matter expert and process owner for clinical documentation improvement and documentation-related revenue cycle workflows. This role is responsible for designing, standardizing, monitoring, and continuously improving documentation and coding processes that support compliant, accurate, and timely reimbursement.Reporting to the Director, Revenue Cycle Management, the role partners closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, Central Fee Abstraction, and Revenue Cycle teams to align documentation practices with regulatory requirements and downstream billing workflows. The Lead proactively analyzes documentation, coding, and revenue cycle data and trends, including working documentation- and coding-related work queues as needed, to identify gaps, patterns, and opportunities for improvement. Findings are translated into actionable insights and direct, targeted education and feedback to clinicians. By monitoring evolving coding standards and reimbursement policies, the role guides clinicians in maintaining compliant, high-quality documentation that supports accurate billing and reimbursement.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze documentation, coding, and reimbursement trends to identify gaps, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and deliver targeted, data-driven education and feedback to physicians and advanced practice providers on documentation and coding best practices.
- Create, maintain, and optimize clinical documentation templates to support accurate, complete, and compliant charting.
- Work related revenue cycle work queues to validate trends, troubleshoot complex issues, and inform process improvement and education efforts.
- Monitor and interpret changes in coding regulations, reimbursement policies, and compliance standards. Assists to implement changes accordingly.
- Act as a trusted resource and consultant for physicians and advanced practice providers regarding documentation and coding questions.
- Track and report the impact of educational interventions and documentation improvement efforts on departmental outcomes.
- Perform analysis of financial and statistical data related to revenue cycle, including the creation, analysis, and distribution of revenue related reports.
- Act as a subject-matter expert on clinical documentation improvement (CDI) and professional fee/hospital coding within the Emergency Department.
- Escalate issues to the Director, Revenue Cycle Management as appropriate.
Credentials:
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) status, equivalent (eg, RHIA) credential, or experience with Clinical Documentation Improvement programs
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- H.S. Diploma/GED (Required), Bachelor's Degree (preferred)
- 3+ years Clinical experience (Required), Emergency Department experience (preferred)
