General Summary Statement
Provides continuing education for the OR staff. Provides education in a variety of formats based on the topic presented and the needs of learners, nursing units, and the organization. Provides continuing education for OR/Surgical Services staff with PA Nurses Contact Hours. Conducts annual critical care competency assessment sessions. Oversees staff development with the orientation program for all RN's hired into the Operating room. Mentors RN staff. Participates in hospital and nursing projects and serves on committees. Must be flexible to work on all shifts as needed. Supports new hires in all Surgical Services departments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Curriculum Development
- Assesses educational needs of employees in assigned areas on an ongoing basis via observation, written feedback and communication with Nurse Manager, Director, staff and hospital personnel.
- Develops new programs/courses as needed and updates courses as needed.
- Plans programs that align with organizational goals.
- Develops materials that are original and do not violate copyright and are cost appropriate for the program. Demonstrates respect for patient confidentiality when using case studies, and in the preparation of all education materials.
- Provides continuing education, required in-services and competency assessments for the departments as needed.
- Provides education as needed in a timely manner for classroom or the clinical area, based on unit needs for the patient or staff learning needs.
- Selects appropriate speakers (e.g. physicians, vendor, and other professional) for programs and provides program coordination and speaker support..
- Attains contact hours or equivalent certification for RN programs as appropriate for topic and length of program..
- Maintains instructor certification for AHA programs.
Public Speaking & Teaching
- Demonstrates the ability to effectively teach and communicate to personnel at all education and skill levels.
- Demonstrates the ability to use a variety of teaching methods both in the classroom and clinical environments.
- Uses class time effectively, plans curriculum to fit within time allotted.
- Applies adult learning principles.
- Teaches current standards of Nursing Practice and integrates current CCH Policies and Procedures into curriculum; integrates current Joint Commission and other regulating agencies' standards into curriculum.
- Distributes course evaluations for participants to rate the Educator's teaching effectiveness. Uses feedback from these evaluations in future courses.
- Provides "real time" unit based education for clinical needs. For example, on-unit instruction for nurses using new equipment or doing a procedure for the first time.
- Facilitates an environment that supports evidence based practice.
- May assist staff development with teaching CPR initial and retraining courses.
Orientation Program.
- Communicates on an ongoing basis during the orientation period with the orientee, preceptor(s), Nurse Manager, & Director to evaluate progress and learning needs of the new employee.
- Provides appropriate intervention for orientee performance problems.
- Provides support to preceptors via Preceptor Workshops, and unit based consultations.
- Communicates sensitive information appropriately.
Professional Role Development
- Develops own nursing knowledge via practice, observation, professional literature, networking and attending conferences.
- Promotes best practice by demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care and the profession of nursing.
- Promotes innovation and creativity in the practice environment.
- Promotes staff growth by consulting on clinical, education and professional issues.
- Prioritizes and organizes work effectively, meets deadlines, is thorough in project completion.
- Accepts constructive feedback about performance or behaviors and shows evidence of change.
- Demonstrates verbal and writing skills that are appropriate for business communication, and develops teaching materials that are of professional quality.
- Adheres to the Department of Nursing Dress Code.
- Monitors assignment to promote professional growth and clinical competencies.
Department of Nursing and Organization Support
- Attends assigned committee meetings and contributes to the committees. Serves as Chairperson when appropriate.
- Communicates support of organizational values and strategies.
- Supports the following organizational programs: Magnet , iCare Values, Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification, and Nursing Councils.
- Facilitates group processes, e.g. committees.
- Maintains attendance/lateness standards in accordance with Hospital policy.
Education Training and Experience
BSN is required. A Masters degree in Nursing or Healthcare field is desired, but not required upon hire. Educators are encouraged to pursue a master's degree within 2 years of hire.
At least 5 years of clinical experience in specific area assigned is required. Experience in Staff Development is desired but not required.
Must have skills in Word Processing and use of the Internet. Must be able to do on the job training for Power Point, hospital computer systems, and the hospital patient documentation system, Soarian Clinicals.
Licensure/Certification
Current Pennsylvania RN license is required. Must have CNOR certification within 2 years of hire. Must be certified in Staff Development (Nursing Professional Development), or area of clinical specialty.
CPR Certification.
