Job Summary
The Hospital Specimen Technician is responsible for the accurate preparation, processing, accessioning, and management of patient specimens within a hospital laboratory setting. This role ensures all specimens are processed according to Quest Diagnostics and hospital protocols while maintaining quality standards, regulatory compliance, and exceptional customer service. The technician serves as a liaison between the hospital and Quest Diagnostics, ensuring timely specimen handling, issue resolution, and effective communication with laboratory staff.

Key Responsibilities
Specimen Processing & Test Management
Receive, verify, accession, and process patient specimens accurately and efficiently.
Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, handling, storage, and preparation for laboratory testing.
Follow established pre-analytical processing procedures and specimen requirements.
Demonstrate proficiency in test ordering policies, specimen preparation, and send-out testing procedures.
Perform remote accessioning (pre-accessioning) as required.
Utilize Quest Diagnostics systems (Quantum) and hospital Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) to process specimens.
Print and distribute Quest Diagnostics testing reports.
Monitor specimen tracking and workflow using available reports and tracking tools.
Maintain inventory and coordinate laboratory supply ordering.

Problem Resolution
Investigate and resolve specimen-related issues including missing information, unacceptable specimens (TNP), test inquiries (TIQ), additional specimen requests, and test cancellations.
Collaborate with laboratory personnel to resolve discrepancies and ensure timely processing.
Escalate unresolved issues appropriately while maintaining compliance with laboratory policies.
Customer Service & Communication
Serve as the primary liaison between hospital laboratory staff and Quest Diagnostics.
Provide outstanding customer service through professional communication and timely issue resolution.
Manage inbound calls regarding specimen status, testing requirements, billing inquiries, and laboratory services.
Communicate effectively with hospital staff, laboratory personnel, sales representatives, and internal departments.
Provide updates regarding specimen problems, testing delays, cancellations, and special testing requirements.
Quality & Compliance
Maintain compliance with laboratory safety standards, HIPAA regulations, and all applicable quality guidelines.
Follow biohazard safety procedures and infection control practices.
Ensure accurate documentation and data entry throughout the specimen processing workflow.
Support continuous process improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency and quality.

Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
1–3 years of experience in specimen processing, laboratory support, healthcare, or a related clinical environment.
Medical terminology knowledge required.
Strong data entry skills with the ability to accurately enter approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) preferred.
Previous hospital laboratory experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience with Quest Diagnostics systems.
Experience working in a hospital laboratory or clinical laboratory environment.
Knowledge of specimen transport, send-out testing, and laboratory quality assurance processes.
