Clinical Lab Manager - Hematology

Job Description

The Manager, Hematology Laboratory is responsible for the overall leadership, operational performance, and strategic oversight of the hematology laboratory. This role manages technical operations, staff performance, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, budgeting, and resource allocation to ensure the delivery of accurate, timely, and high-quality laboratory services. The manager collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to support organizational goals, maintain accreditation standards, and drive continuous process improvement.

Job Responsibilities

• Oversee the daily operations of the hematology laboratory to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality patient testing.
• Lead, mentor, and develop laboratory staff through coaching, performance management, and ongoing professional development.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and accrediting agency regulations, standards, and quality requirements.
• Monitor quality assurance and quality control programs, implementing corrective actions when necessary.
• Manage departmental budgets, staffing, scheduling, inventory, and resource utilization to optimize operational efficiency.
• Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and best practices.
• Evaluate and implement process improvements to enhance productivity, quality, and patient service.
• Collaborate with physicians, clinical leaders, and other departments to support organizational and patient care initiatives.
• Oversee equipment maintenance, validation, and implementation of new technologies as needed.
• Prepare for and participate in regulatory inspections, audits, and accreditation activities.
• Analyze operational metrics and prepare reports to support strategic planning and performance improvement initiatives.
• Foster a culture of safety, compliance, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Job Requirements & Qualifications

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related laboratory science field preferred.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science program preferred.
• Minimum of five (5) years of progressive clinical laboratory experience, preferably within hematology.
• Previous laboratory management or supervisory experience preferred.
• ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certification preferred.
• Strong knowledge of laboratory operations, quality management systems, and regulatory standards.
• Demonstrated leadership, team development, and organizational skills.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities.
• Experience with budgeting, staffing, and operational planning is preferred.
• Proficiency with laboratory information systems (LIS) and standard computer applications.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment while maintaining a commitment to quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
