Under the general supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist and Laboratory Supervisor, this position works with other members of the lab team to process patients, collect blood, urine and other specimens, and process specimens for in-house testing and send-outs to a Reference Laboratory. This position performs phlebotomy and specimen processing duties, and efficient venous puncture on students by following phlebotomy policies and procedures established by the UCR Student Health Services Clinical Laboratory. Performs test requisition verification and patient identification either electronically or on paper, and performs computer entry of lab orders both in-house and send outs. This position necessitates the knowledge of the proper specimen handling and collection techniques and the correct Order of Draw. Assists the CLS in the setup of CLIA-waved test. This position has direct involvement in quality assurance studies, greater quality compliance record keeping, and maintaining supplies. This position may include providing clinical resource leadership/training in phlebotomy and/or specimen processing. Please be advised that this position is a per diem position. A per diem appointment is an appointment to complement or substitute for career and limited appointments, when necessary, to maintain appropriate staffing levels for temporary periods. An appointee may be scheduled on a pre-scheduled basis or as needed on a day-to- day basis or called off from a pre-established schedule as determined by the University. The full salary range for the Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomist is $29.00 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.\n \nServes patients by identifying the best method of collecting blood samples and other specimens, asking relevant questions related to specimen collection, explains sampling procedures to patients, performs skilled, efficient venous and/or skin punctures, and prepares all specimens for the appropriate testing following established policies and procedures by the UCR Student Health Services Clinical Laboratory. Verifies test requisition and patient identification either electronically or on paper and bringing discrepancies to the attention of the CLS or Laboratory Supervisor. Be knowledgeable of the proper specimen handling and collection techniques and the correct order of draw. Perform computer entry of laboratory orders both in-house and send outs. Correctly processes all lab requisitions and forms for routine and reference testing. Receive specimens from patients and other medical staff and determines the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria in testing procedures. Follows established company and department policies and procedures. Follows the guidelines for safety, environmental and infection control. Demonstrates a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality. Be able to uphold the UCR Principles of Community and the Standard of Ethical Conduct.Assists the CLS in the setup of CLIA-waved tests. Orders, monitors and maintains a consistent supply of phlebotomy consumables. Performs inventory of supplies and other consumables in a timely manner and communicates its status with appropriate personnel to ensure the availability of adequate supplies and to ensure no disruption in laboratory operations. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the ordering physician or provider or calling the reference laboratory, referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification and notifying the Laboratory Supervisor for unresolved orders. Promptly and courteously answers the phone and assists clients and other departments. Be respectful and always observe proper decorum, being mindful of the choice of words and tone of your voice. Maintains a cooperative working relationship with co-workers. Ensure a collaborative team-support working environment by assisting co-workers in the execution of their responsibilities whenever possible. Maintains professional growth and development through continuing education activities.Be able to clean and organize laboratory work area at the beginning and at the end of each shift by being able to discard specimens and dispose biohazard waste, accordingly, being always mindful of universal precautions. Participates in assisting the CLS in the introduction of new tests, procedures, and methodologies as well as in the training of new staff in the laboratory. Actively participates in all QI/QA projects and other related activities of the laboratory. Ensures compliance with relevant documentations supported by the laboratory including but not limited to submitting completed CMR reports to providers and to RPH, COVID results to state agencies, and other reportable documents, no shows report, scanning and sending results by Sfax, and other related responsibilities as may deemed necessary.
