Job Description Summary
The Clinical Nursing Instructor in Health Sciences will be an essential part of a diverse team committed to managing variable staffing demands within clinical settings. In this full-time clinical role, the nurse will serve as a dedicated clinical travel faculty member overseeing teaching assignments in clinical settings.
This clinical nurse will teach clinical in the nursing program to address short-term staffing needs for clinical faculty, ensuring a seamless and consistent educational experience.
This role necessitates availability for high-priority scheduling, including Thursdays, Fridays, and weekends and varies, day and evening.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in nursing. Note: degrees and hours must be from a college accredited by a US Department of Education accepted accrediting agency such as SACSCOC.
- Must hold a current, unrestricted North Carolina license to practice as a registered nurse.
- Two calendar years or the equivalent of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse.
- Prior to or within the first three years of employment, have preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to the assignment. (Note: Documentation criteria are per the North Carolina Board of Nursing).
- Must maintain competence in the areas of assigned responsibility.
- Have current knowledge of nursing practice for the registered nurse (and the licensed practical nurse).
- Understand and be committed to the unique nature and role of the college - high-priority scheduling.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace, spreadsheets, presentation and collaboration apps and software.
- Willingness to travel and adapt to different work settings.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred:
- Master's degree in nursing with a concentration in nursing education.
- Teaching experience.
- Clinical Teaching or Student Preceptor experience.
Essential Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following and other duties as needed.
Teaching and Learning:
- Assume responsibility for teaching assignments as recommended by the program coordinator and approved by the director and dean.
- Facilitate the learning process by designing and implementing appropriate, meaningful instructional activities that maximize student outcomes.
- Adhere to the departmental course guidelines and ensure that content covers SACSCOC-approved competencies.
- Fulfill the duties of clinical instructor in the supervision of students as applicable.
- Evaluate student performance using methods appropriate to the course.
- Meet with students regarding academic progress.
Provide timely, mid-semester, and final semester evaluations on student performance.
- Attend mandatory program update meetings for clinical adjunct faculty at the beginning of each semester.
- Participate in orientation/training to meet compliance requirements.
- Take responsibility for instruction, supervision, and evaluation of student performance.
Provide timely feedback, grades, and submit clinical paperwork indicating student progress.
Curriculum Development:
- Participate in departmental activities relative to revising and updating the program(s) in the area of expertise.
- Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing curriculum.
Clinical:
- Guide students in completing their clinical objectives.
- Assist with evaluating student's clinical performance.
- Enforce all program rules and regulations consistently and fairly, without discrimination or favoritism.
- Provide perceptive input/feedback to the program faculty on how to enhance the learning environment of the clinical sessions for the students.
- Assume responsibility for maintaining all required College records including attendance and grade reports, roll books, etc.
- Utilize evidenced-based practices in the clinical setting.
- Conduct clinical evaluations to assess student performance and maintain records.
- Guide students through practical experiences, applying nursing theory and techniques in clinical settings.
- Adhere to College policies and contribute to curriculum development and teaching techniques.
Professional Development:
- Develop a professional development plan that is approved by the director and dean, and participate in those activities that achieve approved professional development activities.
- Maintain current licensure, certification, or other professional credentials required for the position.
- Maintain membership and participation in professional organizations.
- Read professional literature.
- Keep abreast of current technology.
- Attend workshops, conferences, and professional meetings.
- Participate in on-campus professional development activities.
- Develop and maintain competence relevant to teaching responsibilities.
- Engage in professional development in nursing education, including any certification and continuing education.
- Ensure that professional licenses, required certifications, and faculty vitae are kept current and on file.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and program administrators to support program policies and objectives.
