Overview:

Our program provides residents with a strong foundation in diagnostic clinical pathology and basic and/or clinical research. Our goal is to prepare residents for successful completion of the ACVP board examination, with sufficient research experience to facilitate any chosen career path. The program emphasizes the integration of clinical and laboratory diagnostic findings and their application to the diagnosis of disease in animals.

 

Residents are mentored by ACVP board-certified clinical pathologists. Training includes both formal (courses, rounds, seminars) and informal interactions with faculty and staff. The position can be a combined residency/graduate training program (MS or PhD) but a graduate degree is NOT a required element of the residency.

 

Original research is required for the MS and PhD programs, and research opportunities exist in many areas including platelet function testing and hemostasis, clinical application of flow cytometry, oncology, infectious disease, molecular pathology, neuropathology, metabolism, and endocrine disorders, avian and aquatic pathobiology, and parasitic disease. Residents will spend time on diagnostic services and will be involved in graduate and professional teaching.

 

There is an expectation for scholarly activity, which includes the preparation of manuscripts and participation in retrospective and prospective research projects. Residents are also encouraged to give presentations regarding their research findings and/or clinical cases at national, regional, and local meetings. Residents are also involved in the teaching of graduate and professional students provided many opportunities to polish teaching skills for a variety of audiences. 

Responsibilities:

Residents will participate in diagnostic service, teaching, and scholarly activity. Diagnostic service includes involvement in the Auburn Clinical Pathology Lab with an emphasis on evaluating and preparing cytology and hematology reports.

 

Residents in Clinical Pathology participate in the instruction of veterinary students at many levels, including didactic lectures for 2nd-year veterinary students, clinical case discussions with 3rd-year veterinary students, and supervision of clinical rotations in diagnostic pathology for 4th-year veterinary students. 

Qualifications:

Applicants must have appropriate training in veterinary medicine (graduation from an accredited college of veterinary medicine or equivalent experience) and must be eligible for acceptance to graduate school at Auburn University.
