JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY
· Provides a patient centered and forward thinking, friendly, efficient, and exceptional patient experience.
· Provides comprehensive nursing care during the consultation, post-op, and follow-up phases.
· Serve as a liaison as part of the Clinical Team at The Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery (“BCAPS”).
· Coordinates total patient care and patient safety with other health team members, particularly the New Vista Surgical Suites (“NVSS”) Team and Patient Care Surgical Coordinator (“PCSC”) team.
· Demonstrates professional growth and development by accepting responsibility and accountability for one’s nursing practice.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
· The position requires an Associate Degree in Nursing; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
· An active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan is required.
· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
· Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
· Previous experience working in a Plastic Surgery Office or Med Spa is preferred.
· Previous experience working as a registered nurse in a similar environment or capacity and understanding of the tasks and requirements of the position.
· This position requires the ability to organize and prioritize work, meet role-specific deadlines, work independently and collaboratively, and respond appropriately to time-sensitive patient care needs.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
· Demonstrates professional interpersonal communication skills to facilitate polished and effective interaction with patients, vendors, and BCAPS/NVSS team members, both verbally and written.
· Able to work with minimum supervision and to organize and prioritize work in order of importance to deliver an exceptional patient experience and achieve BCAPS strategic goals.
· Maintains certification by earning approved continuing education.
· Maintains current basic life support (BLS) certification.
· Able to apply advanced knowledge of anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, telemetry, reading labs, medications, and sterile fields.
· Able to start an IV following BCAPS protocol.
· Able to perform duties that may require remaining seated or standing for prolonged periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.
· Able to assist with the safe movement and transport of patients, instruments, instrument trays, and other equipment, using available equipment, team assistance, and reasonable accommodation as appropriate.
· Maintains a professional attitude with respect to dignity, privacy, and safety of patients and staff.
· Able to perform the essential duties of the role accurately and efficiently in routine and emergency situations and across the surgical environments in which the position works.
· Able to efficiently operate a computer, various software applications/platforms, and general office equipment, such as a copy machine, fax machine, and other common office equipment.
· Able to balance the importance of following set procedures with a desire to consistently improve quality of work product and efficiency of processes while considering practice expenses and the cost to administer programs.
· Dedication to presenting a professional and positive image to patients, vendors, and team members.
· Basic problem solving and troubleshooting skills to handle emergent issues.
· Commitment to maintaining progressive knowledge and skills essential to successfully perform the duties outlined herein.
Note: This level of knowledge is normally acquired with the completion of a degree-seeking education, attaining a nursing license, and a minimum of 2 years peri-operative experience, preferably in an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSILIBITIES:
· Competency to assess the physiological health status of the patient pre and post operatively:
o Communicate with patients via phone, text, email, and occasionally in person.
o Remotely assess the patient’s conditions and have knowledge of surgery specific pre- and post-operative care.
o Initiate paperwork for labs and diagnostic studies as needed, and report to the physicians any abnormal results as identified by lab or radiology reports.
o Verify the operative procedure using consent forms, surgical booking forms, patient statements, and surgeon verification, which is documented in the Electronic Medical Note (EMN).
o Verify any allergies to medication, food, or chemicals, and document it in the EMN.
o Communicate and document physiological data to other members of the surgical and health care team in verbal and written reports, including data which might be relevant to surgery and discharge planning.
o Utilize clinical expertise and knowledge to make judgments when it comes to pain, vomiting, infection, and miscellaneous issues by involving the physician when necessary.
o Communicate and document any issues to surgeon, clinical lead, anesthesia provider, and appropriate members of the health care team.
o Communicate realistic and attainable goals (pre and post operatively) based on planned procedures.
o Document all communication in the EMN and when necessary, deliver it directly to the physician.
o Coordinate the use of equipment and schedule a provider for non-surgical treatments performed during surgery in the operating room.
o Coordinate patient care needs with other members of the surgical and health care team.
o Communicate and document patient’s issues/concerns to members of the surgical and health care team in verbal and written reports.
o Assist the NVSS team with questions and perform effectively in a Clinical emergency.
· Competency to participate in patient and family education:
o Participate in pre-operative teaching as needed, such as explanation of surgical routine and environment via face-to-face instruction, pre-operative phone calls, texts and emails as assigned.
o Communicate and document the education provided to patients and family members as part of the EMN.
· Competency to administer drugs and solutions as prescribed:
o Prescribe or administer medications according to BCAPS policy.
o Communicate and document administration of medications and solutions according to BCAPS policy, including medication errors, as part of the EMN.
· Competency to adhere to all safety policies and procedures:
o Maintain communication with all areas of the practice involved in patient care.
o Follow all BCAPS protocols, including adherence to HIPAA, QUAD A, AORN Recommended Practices, and OSHA guidelines.
· Competency to respect patient’s rights:
o Demonstrate awareness and practice according to the Patient’s Bill of Rights and BCAPS policy.
o Maintain patient safety and patient confidentiality.
o Communicate and document provision for patient rights as appropriate.
· Competency to perform nursing actions that demonstrate accountability:
o Exercise safe judgment in decision-making.
o Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changes in nursing practice.
o Respond in a positive manner to constructive criticism or recommendations for improvement.
o Demonstrate tact, understanding, and good guest relations when dealing with patients, visitors, team members, and third-party vendors.
o Practice within Registered Nurse scope of practice.
o Practice within ethical and legal guidelines.
o Communicate and document nursing actions.
· Competency to evaluate effectiveness of nursing care:
o Continuously evaluate the patient’s needs, plan of care, and nursing actions, adjusting the plan as needed to provide optimum patient outcomes.
o Assess the patient’s needs and determine the effectiveness of care to desired patient goals.
o Communicate and document effectiveness of care and results of nursing care to other members of the surgical and health care team in verbal or written documentation.
· Able to apply advanced knowledge of normal and pathological surgical anatomy and physiology.
· Assess patient information, history, physical, and preoperative testing.
· Collaborates with NVSS and Clinical team members to provide continuity of care and maximize patient outcomes.
· Assist patients, visitors, staff, and physicians through professionalism and good communicative skills.
· Assist and participate in orientation of new staff by explaining and demonstrating techniques and methods used and answering questions appropriately.
· Demonstrate flexibility in meeting the needs of BCAPS and the clinical units, including cross-training for all nursing functions and being flexible with shift times.
· Participates in staff meetings and educational opportunities.
· Adhere to OSHA guidelines for Universal Precautions for exposure to blood and body fluids, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Follows AORN Recommended Practices and BCAPS policies at all times.
· Maintain compliance with QUAD A standards and requirements to ensure the safety of the patient and uphold our accreditation.
· Ensure all work is compliant with all BCAPS, HIPAA, and other applicable laws/policies/guidelines.
· Work positively and professionally with all outside third-party vendors, partners, patients, physician offices, and others to positively represent BCAPS.
· In keeping with the teamwork philosophy, acts as a resource person to other staff.
· Prioritize job responsibilities to facilitate optimum patient care and utilization of resources.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

· INTERNAL – The building is a clean, climate-controlled, well-lighted office. This position has exposure to potentially hazardous work situations. Normal peri-operative environment with occasional exposure to chemicals and their odors, cleaning solvents, bodily fluids, and other hazardous materials. Occasional exposure to possible injury when working with machines and equipment, which requires care and following proper safety procedures. The noise level is moderate and includes sounds of office and hospital equipment.
· EXTERNAL – There is no travel associated with this position.
· GENERAL – Work requires frequent communication and movement within the clinical environment. The position intermittently involves moving, carrying, and pushing objects of little to medium weight. The employee must be able to handle instrumentation, receive and understand instructions through effective communication methods, and distinguish supplies and instrumentation, with or without reasonable accommodation. Work requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to handle instrumentation, hearing to understand verbal instructions, and near vision to distinguish supplies and instrumentation.
· OTHER– Based on the OSHA guidelines for protection against occupational exposure to hepatitis and HIV, this position is described as Category I. This means that this position has exposure to blood and body fluids. Policies are in place for Universal Precautions identifying exposure risks and appropriate barrier protection.
