  • Life Insurance: The coverage amount is based on two and one-half times appointment salary rounded up to the next whole thousand with a maximum coverage of $100,000 and includes the same amount of Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefits. The University currently pays the entire cost of coverage.
  • Medical, Dental and Prescription Drug Coverage: The cost of coverage is shared between employees and the University. Rates are determined by participation in Wellness Program and use of tobacco products. Coverage is available on the first of the month following appointment date.
  • TIAA Retirement Contributions: Contributions begin based upon the first day of employment at a contribution rate of ten (10) percent of base appointment salary paid in full by ISU. The contributions are vested immediately. There are 40 investment options from which to choose.
  • TIAA Auto Enroll: New employees are automatically enrolled in a tax deferred retirement program at hire: three (3) percent is deducted before taxes for the program to facilitate retirement planning. Employees may opt out of the program within 90 days.
  • Long Term Disability Coverage: Employees are eligible after three (3) years of continuous, regular employment with the University. This policy guarantees approved disabled employees a 66 2/3 percent income protection (from all sources) after 180 days of continuous total disability. Immediate participation is available for current members of a comparable group disability insurance program within 90 days prior to ISU employment and that would have provided income protection upon disability for at least five years.
  • Fee Waiver Program: For the employee, spouse and dependent children: Staff may enroll in up to 18 hours of course work each academic year at a reduced rate. Spouses may enroll in 15 semester hours each academic year with 80% of qualified tuition waived. Dependent children of regular full-time staff who are full-time degree seeking undergraduate students at ISU may receive a fee waiver of 80% of qualified tuition for up to a total of ten (10) semesters.
  • Sick Leave: Accrued at a rate of 12 days per fiscal year with unlimited accumulation.
  • Vacation: Pay level 11 and below accrues up to 15 vacation days earned per year 1 through 4; 20 vacation days per year thereafter. Pay level 12 and above accrues 20 vacation days per year

Job Summary/Basic Function

The Clinical Simulation Specialist is a core member of RHIC's Education and Curriculum Circle, responsible for designing, building, and facilitating the simulation experiences delivered across RHIC's programs. Reporting to the Associate Director of Education and Curriculum, this position is the primary creator of the case content, character work, and scenario materials that bring RHIC simulations to life. The Clinical Simulation Specialist combines clinical realism with sound educational design to produce scenarios that meet learner needs, partner-facility realities, and current standards of practice.

Specific Responsibilities Required Relevant Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in nursing, allied health, healthcare education, adult education, instructional design, or a related field.

Minimum two (2) years of experience in healthcare education, clinical training, simulation-based education, or a closely related field.

Demonstrated ability to design educational content for adult learners

Required Field(s) of Study

Nursing, allied health, healthcare education, adult education, instructional design, or a related field.

Preferred Relevant Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in nursing, education, instructional design, or a related field.
  • Clinical background or healthcare work experience (no active license required).
  • Prior experience designing or facilitating SP-based or manikin-based simulations.
  • CHSE certification, or eligibility and willingness to pursue within 24 months of hire.
  • Familiarity with INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP) and ASPE Standards of Best Practice for SP-based education.
  • Experience with debriefing frameworks such as PEARLS or Debriefing with Good Judgment.
  • Experience working with rural healthcare settings or interprofessional learner groups.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Simulation Scenario and Case Development

  • Design and develop simulation scenarios across RHIC programs.
  • Build the full case package for each scenario.
  • Collaborate with clinical subject matter experts and partner-institution faculty to ensure clinical accuracy, currency, and educational relevance of case content.
  • Adapt scenarios to rural healthcare contexts, reflecting the equipment, staffing, and clinical realities of RHIC's partner facilities.
  • Maintain scenario documentation and version control to contribute to RHIC's scenario library.
  • Update existing scenarios based on facilitator feedback, learner outcome data, and changes in clinical standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Learner Assessment and Curriculum Evaluation

  • Develop pre/post assessments, observation checklists, and competency tools tied to assigned scenarios.
  • Compile and analyze learner outcome data to contribute findings to RHIC's program reports.
  • Support the Associate Director in producing outcomes and impact reports.
  • Maintain documentation needed for accreditation, grant reporting, and continuing education credit on assigned programs.
  • Maintain working knowledge of INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP) and apply them to assigned work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

SP Training and Case Preparation

  • Train Simulated Participants on assigned cases: walk them through the character, medical history, expected affect, and scoring criteria.
  • Conduct case-specific rehearsals and calibration sessions with SPs to support interrater reliability across portrayals.
  • Provide SPs with the clinical context they need to portray patients realistically and respond to learner actions appropriately.
  • Collect and incorporate SP feedback to refine cases over time.
  • Coordinate with the Associate Director on SP program quality, standards alignment, and case-related continuing education needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Facilitation and Debriefing

  • Serve as a facilitator at the Simulation Center, partner sites, and on the Mobile Simulation Unit.
  • Demonstrate skill in working with partner educators to develop their debriefing skills.
  • Provide facilitators and partner-institution instructors with case-specific orientation, debriefing notes, and supporting literature.
  • Onboard new RHIC facilitators and contracted instructors on scenarios authored by the Clinical Simulation Specialist, including learning objectives, expected progression, and debriefing focal points.
  • Operate simulators during sessions as needed; coordinate with the Sim Technology Coordinator for advanced configurations.
  • Demonstrate the technical aspects of simulation equipment to SPs, clinical staff, and facilitators as relevant to assigned cases.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Cross-Circle Collaboration and Professional Development

  • Participate actively in Education & Curriculum Circle meetings and contribute to circle priorities.
  • Communicate case-specific needs (SPs, supplies, room setup, technology) to the Simulation Services Coordinator in advance of each event.
  • Collaborate with the Simulation Staging Specialist on day-of case execution and the Sim Technology Coordinator on technology needs.
  • During peak operational periods, assist the Simulation Services Coordinator with scheduling tasks, including processing event requests, confirming bookings, and supporting calendar management as capacity allows.
  • Facilitate tours and orientations of the Simulation Center as needed to support RHIC outreach.
  • Pursue continuing education in simulation-based education; progress toward CHSE certification.
