Job Description

The Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics conducts broad Phase 1 studies across disease boundaries and molecular targets. We strive to provide outstanding patient care while performing innovative Phase 1 trials with new drugs that may eventually improve the management of cancer.

The primary purpose of the Clinical Trial Technician position is to support the execution of clinical trials by collecting, processing, and managing biological specimens, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring compliance with study protocols and regulatory guidelines. This role requires precise documentation, adherence to Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP), and collaboration with research teams to ensure high-quality data collection. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are essential.

The ideal Clinical Trial Technician must have prior blood-drawing experience, with EKG and specimen processing preferred. Candidates should also demonstrate a stable work history and reliability.

Minimum $21.15/hour - Midpoint $26.44/hour - Maximum $31.73/hour

Responsibilities

Specimen Collection and Processing (60%) • Perform biological specimen collection, including phlebotomy of blood and collection of urine and tissue samples according to protocol guidelines.

  • Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) according to study protocol requirements.
  • Process and store specimens according to protocol requirements, including centrifugation for plasma and serum extraction.
  • Ensure accurate labeling, documentation, and data entry for all collected specimens.
  • Maintain specimen integrity through adherence to required temperature controls and handling procedures.
  • Assist in troubleshooting specimen-related issues and protocol deviations.

Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance (20%) • Follow institutional, federal, and sponsor-specific regulatory guidelines for clinical research.

  • Ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and study protocols.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records supporting regulatory audits and inspections.
  • Participate in quality control activities to ensure protocol compliance.
  • Report deviations, adverse events, and safety concerns to appropriate personnel.

Laboratory Operations and Collaboration (20%) • Assist with laboratory equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.

  • Maintain inventory of research kits and laboratory supplies to support study activities.
  • Communicate effectively with clinical research teams, nurses, and investigators.
  • Support process improvement initiatives focused on laboratory efficiency.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions to remain current on best practices.

Additional Duties • Perform other duties as assigned in support of clinical trial operations and laboratory activities.

EDUCATION

  • Required: Associate's Degree in Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related scientific field
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related scientific field

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Two years of experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting. With preferred degree, no experience required
  • Preferred: Prior Blood drawing experience is a must. Prior experience with EKG and specimen processing is a plus
  • May substitute required education degree with additional years of related experience on a one-to-one basis

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Preferred: ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist Certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) or American Certification Agency (ACA) to include Phlebotomy (PBT), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA)
  • Preferred: CCRC - Certified Clinical Research Coordinator
  • Preferred: CCRP - Certified Clinical Research Professional
  • Preferred: CCRA - Certified Clinical Research Associate
