We are seeking an experienced Cloud Software Engineer / Data Engineer to support the development of highly visible, mission-critical data collection capabilities. This position will focus on building tailored technical solutions that accelerate the secure, reliable, and timely delivery of open-source data, information, and insights.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience with Python, AWS, data engineering, and geospatial technologies, along with the ability to rapidly design and deploy solutions for unique and evolving collection challenges.
Depending on the project, work may be performed independently or as part of a collaborative technical team.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with technical leadership to architect, develop, deploy, and maintain multiple fast-turnaround capabilities supporting high-priority collection efforts.
- Design and maintain solutions within an Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment using approved cloud services.
- Strategically apply AI/ML technologies to extract, process, format, and expose relevant content through indexed search tools.
- Process a wide variety of structured and unstructured data, including:
- Raw text
- Audio, images, video, and documents
- CSV, Parquet, and Avro
- JSON, JSONL, and XML
- Other evolving or unknown data formats and schemas
- Provide data engineering support, including cleaning, transforming, modeling, and formatting data from diverse sources.
- Transfer data between cloud storage environments in support of critical and time-sensitive requirements.
- Develop and maintain collection capabilities that can adapt to changes in targets, technologies, data structures, formats, and naming conventions.
- Build and manage AWS resources, including EC2, Lambda, S3, and IAM.
- Validate collected data to ensure it meets required formatting and quality standards.
- Collaborate with mission partners and other technical stakeholders to ensure solutions meet defined requirements and tradecraft needs.
- Maintain all source code within the customer's GitHub environment.
- Create clear technical documentation for source code, deployment processes, and execution procedures.
- Perform ongoing operations and maintenance of deployed capabilities.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated professional experience developing solutions with Python.
- Experience working with geospatial software, programming libraries/packages, and geospatial data formats.
- Hands-on experience creating and managing AWS resources, including:
- Provisioning and managing EC2 instances
- Developing and deploying AWS Lambda functions
- Creating, managing, and writing data to Amazon S3
- Configuring permissions and authorization using AWS IAM policies
- Experience using GitHub for source-code management and collaboration.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience deploying AWS applications using the AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK).
- AWS CDK experience is specifically desired; Ansible and Terraform are not considered substitutes.
- Experience building and deploying containerized applications.
- Experience developing and maintaining search technologies such as Elasticsearch, Apache Lucene, or Amazon OpenSearch.
- Experience creating and programmatically working with SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Experience with additional cloud platforms, including Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Microsoft Azure.
- One or more relevant AWS certifications, such as:
- AWS Certified DevOps Engineer
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect
- AWS Certified SysOps Administrator
