Job Description

The CMT Lab Manager leads day-to-day operations of a Construction Materials Testing laboratory, ensuring testing is performed safely, accurately, and in compliance with accreditation and quality standards. This role combines technical expertise, people leadership, and operational oversight to support high-quality project delivery and a strong safety culture. Your work helps ensure materials used in infrastructure projects meet required standards—protecting communities and the people who use them.

Core Responsibilities

  • Directs and oversees team members on the proper use of testing procedures and equipment to ensure work is completed in strict accordance with the scope of the job and work expectations. Provides oversight and leadership on the sampling and testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, reinforcing steel and asphalt in accordance with standardized procedures and test methods such as ASTM, AASHTO, etc.

  • Provides leadership regarding safety. Follows safety rules and practices, and other safety requirements for all projects. Performs pre-task planning prior to executing work. Coordinates with PM, Engineering, and Scheduling, lab deadlines, schedules, deliverables, contract requirements, client expectations and sub-consultants.

  • Reviews, and when necessary, prepares timely and accurate reports and documentation of lab activities and testing results. Performs analysis to check accuracy, applicability and reasonableness of test data. Compiles and maintains data in various reporting formats including Microsoft tools and LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).

  • Performs/facilitates quality control on all deliverables for compliance with ATO Standard Operating Procedures and Atlas quality procedures.

  • Develops performance goals, outline career paths, identify training and development needs, and conduct performance reviews of assigned CMT lab team members. Identify staffing needs and support recruiting efforts.

  • Implements the Quality Management System in compliance with AMRL, AASHTO, CCRL, and Oregon DOT accreditation requirements. Manage the accreditation processes and preparing for lab audits.

You’ll thrive here if you have

  • Requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant lab experience.
  • Relevant lab certifications by ACI, Oregon DOT, APAO, ASTM, ... and other national, regional, state, and local Construction Materials Testing related certifications Upon Hire Preferred.
