Position Overview
Birch Agency is seeking a caring and dependable Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) / School Health Technician to support students in a school-based setting in Smithfield, North Carolina.

This opportunity is an excellent fit for CNAs who are looking to transition away from the demanding schedules often associated with hospitals and long-term care facilities. Instead of nights, weekends, and heavy facility-based workloads, this role provides the opportunity to work directly with students in a supportive school environment while helping children with their daily health and personal care needs.

The ideal candidate will be compassionate, patient, and comfortable supporting students with disabilities and varying levels of medical and personal care needs.
Key ResponsibilitiesStudent Care & Activities of Daily Living

• 
  Assist students with activities of daily living (ADLs), including personal hygiene, toileting, feeding, dressing, and other personal care needs.
  
• 
  Support students with mobility, positioning, transferring, and other physical assistance as needed.
  
• 
  Provide care and support to exceptional students under the supervision of the School Nurse and special education teachers.
  
• 
  Promote student dignity, independence, safety, and comfort during personal care activities.
  
• 
  Follow individualized student care plans and school protocols.
  

Health Room Support

• 
  Provide basic first aid and support to students visiting the school health room.
  
• 
  Follow established RN protocols when responding to illness, minor injuries, and other health concerns.
  
• 
  Notify the School Nurse of changes in student condition or concerns requiring additional assessment.
  
• 
  Assist with maintaining a safe, clean, and organized health environment.
  

Medication & Health Procedures

• 
  Administer routine medications when appropriately trained and authorized, following physician orders, school policies, and nursing protocols.
  
• 
  Assist the School Nurse and/or LPN with specialized health procedures for students with complex medical needs.
  
• 
  Follow individualized healthcare plans and student-specific medical instructions.
  
• 
  Maintain confidentiality when handling student health information.
  

Documentation & Communication

• 
  Track and document student health responses and daily concerns.
  
• 
  Report changes in student health, behavior, or physical condition directly to the School Nurse.
  
• 
  Communicate effectively with the School Nurse, special education teachers, administrators, and other school staff.
  
• 
  Maintain accurate records related to assigned student care responsibilities.
  

Qualifications

• 
  Active CNA certification required
  
• 
  Previous experience working with children or individuals with disabilities is a plus.
  
• 
  Experience providing assistance with ADLs, feeding, toileting, mobility, and personal care is a plus.
  
• 
  Healthcare, pediatric, special education, or long-term care experience is a plus.
  
• 
  CPR/First Aid certification is a plus.
  
• 
  Strong communication, patience, and interpersonal skills.
  
• 
  Ability to work effectively under the direction of the School Nurse and special education team.
  
• 
  Compassionate and dependable approach to supporting students with diverse needs.
