CNC Manufacturing Engineer

Job Summary

  • CNC Programming & Optimization: Develop, simulate, and optimize CNC programs for complex aerospace components, with a strong focus on 3 and 5-axis milling machines.
  • Machine Deskilling: Analyze machining operations and implement engineering solutions (e.g., specialized fixturing, advanced macro programming, standardized tooling setups, and visual work instructions) to reduce the operator skill required to run complex jobs.
  • Process Engineering: Develop and document comprehensive manufacturing processes, routing steps, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure repeatable quality and maximize spindle uptime.
  • Tooling & Fixture Design: Design, model, and procure custom workholding fixtures, cutting tools, and gauges to support production requirements and deskilling initiatives.
  • Continuous Improvement: Lead root-cause analysis on machining defects or inefficiencies. Apply lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to reduce cycle times, minimize scrap, and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • New Product Introduction (NPI): Collaborate closely with design engineering to ensure design for manufacturability (DFM) on new products, transitioning them smoothly from prototype to high-volume production.
  • Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to CNC setup personnel and machine operators on the shop floor.

Receives Direction From:

VP of Operations

Examples of Essential Functions:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Programming Expertise: Advanced proficiency in CAM software (e.g., Fusion 360, Mastercam, ESPRIT, NX, or similar) for complex 3D surfacing and multi-axis toolpaths.
  • Machining Knowledge: Deep technical understanding of feeds, speeds, cutting tool geometries, and advanced machining strategies for aerospace-grade materials.
  • Deskilling Proficiency: Take complex CNC setups and engineering them down to reliable, operator-friendly processes (Poka-yoke/error-proofing).
  • Industry Standards: Application of AS9100 quality standards and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) per ASME Y14.5.
  • Problem Solving: Strong analytical skills with a hands-on approach to resolving shop-floor manufacturing bottlenecks.

Accountability:

  • Effectiveness related to cost, quality, and quantity.

Qualifications Guidelines

Knowledge of:

  • Machining of aluminum, steels, aircraft alloys and plastics.
  • Aerospace and Defense industry specifications.
  • Design for shop tooling and fixtures.
  • Machine preparatory codes (G codes) and miscellaneous function codes (M codes)
  • 3 and 5 axis milling
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)

Ability to:

  • Manage capital equipment purchases and layout
  • Program, set up, and troubleshooting CNC machines as needed.
  • Work independently as well as an integral part of multifunctional teams.
  • Liaise between design engineering and manufacturing.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.
  • Provide technical leadership and support for multiple projects running concurrently.
  • Independent decision making based on information available.

Education/training/experience:

A 4-year degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a combination experience and relevant education/certifications.

Physical Standards:

Ability to access all machines for maintenance and operation; to lift 30 pounds; to work in a standing and/or sitting position with a variety of machines. Good eyesight, hearing, and finger dexterity required.
