CNC Manufacturing Engineer Job Summary
CNC Programming & Optimization Develop simulate and optimize CNC programs for complex aerospace components with a strong focus on 3 and 5-axis milling machines.
Machine Deskilling Analyze machining operations and implement engineering solutions e.g. specialized fixturing advanced macro programming standardized tooling setups and visual work instructions to reduce the operator skill required to run complex jobs.
Process Engineering Develop and document comprehensive manufacturing processes routing steps and standard operating procedures SOPs to ensure repeatable quality and maximize spindle uptime.
Tooling & Fixture Design Design model and procure custom workholding fixtures cutting tools and gauges to support production requirements and deskilling initiatives.
Continuous Improvement Lead root-cause analysis on machining defects or inefficiencies. Apply lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to reduce cycle times minimize scrap and improve overall equipment effectiveness OEE.
New Product Introduction Collaborate closely with design engineering to ensure design for manufacturability DFM on new products transitioning them smoothly from prototype to high-volume production.
Mentorship Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to CNC setup personnel and machine operators on the shop floor.
Responsibilities Examples of Essential Functions Programming Expertise Advanced proficiency in CAM software e.g. Fusion 360 Mastercam ESPRIT NX or similar for complex 3D surfacing and multi-axis toolpaths.
Machining Knowledge Deep technical understanding of feeds speeds cutting tool geometries and advanced machining strategies for aerospace-grade materials.
Deskilling Proficiency Take complex CNC setups and engineering them down to reliable operator-friendly processes Poka-yoke error-proofing.
Industry Standards Application of AS9100 quality standards and GD&T Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5.
Problem Solving Strong analytical skills with a hands-on approach to resolving shop-floor manufacturing bottlenecks.
Accountability Effectiveness related to cost quality and quantity.
Qualifications Guidelines Knowledge of Machining of aluminum steels aircraft alloys and plastics. Aerospace and Defense industry specifications. Design for shop tooling and fixtures. Machine preparatory codes G codes and miscellaneous function codes M codes 3 and 5 axis milling Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing GD&T.
Ability to Manage capital equipment purchases and layout Program set up and troubleshooting CNC machines as needed.
Work independently as well as an integral part of multifunctional teams. Liaise between design engineering and manufacturing. Communicate effectively both verbally and in written form. Provide technical leadership and support for multiple projects running concurrently. Independent decision making based on information available.
Education/Training/Experience A 4-year degree in Manufacturing Engineering Mechanical Engineering or a combination experience and relevant education/certifications.
Physical Standards Ability to access all machines for maintenance and operation to lift 30 pounds to work in a standing and/or sitting position with a variety of machines. Good eyesight, hearing, and finger dexterity required.
