In this role, you will be responsible for setting up, operating, and performing occasional program edits on vertical and multi-axis CNC mills. The ideal candidate will have strong troubleshooting skills and a deep commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.
Note: This is a production job shop environment handling medium-volume runs (100-500 pieces) where 75% of jobs are bar stock and 25% are castings/billets. All parts are small enough to be easily held by hand (no cranes or heavy rigging required).
Key Responsibilities
Setup & Operation: Safely and efficiently set up and operate CNC vertical mills for production machining.
First-Piece Inspection: Prove out new setups and thoroughly inspect the first piece to ensure compliance with specifications.
Program Editing & Optimization: Troubleshoot, edit, and optimize existing programs at the control panel using G-code to ensure maximum production efficiency.
Documentation: Document new program changes and process variations to ensure setups can be easily duplicated in the future.
Quality & Inspection: Take full ownership of part quality by inspecting and deburring finished pieces using manual measuring instruments against blueprint dimensions.
Tooling Management: Proactively monitor workloads and plan tooling requirements for upcoming jobs to minimize machine downtime.
Preventative Maintenance: Use skill and caution to prevent machinery damage (crashes), perform basic preventative machine maintenance, and maintain a clean, organized work area.
Qualifications & Skills
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience working independently on setting up and operating CNC mills in a job shop environment.
Technical Skills: Strong understanding of CNC programming structure, tooling theory, and proper speeds/feeds for a variety of materials.
Controls: Previous experience with Fanuc controls is highly preferred; manual programming or program editing experience is a strong plus.
Equipment Knowledge: Familiarity with Makino horizontal mills is helpful but not required.
Blueprints & GD&T: Proven ability to identify critical blueprint dimensions and accurately check them. Strong GD&T skills are highly desirable.
Tools: Possession of your own standard measuring tools/gauges is preferred (internal quality control will provide specialized gauges and calibrate personal tools).
Attributes: High dependability, exceptional attention to detail, and the flexibility to adapt to a constantly changing production schedule.
