The CNC Programmer works under the direction of the Manufacturing Engineering Manager with minimum supervision. Is responsible for CNC machine programming, training, fixture design, and associated preventive/reactive maintenance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Design and develop robust CNC programs for 3 and 5 axis machining centers and routers utilizing CAM software. Design, develop, and/or modify CNC tooling processes and procedures to support the manufacturing of composite parts and assemblies. Provide well-documented instructions. Analyze engineering drawings to determine the most efficient way to manufacture parts. Provide ongoing support of operators for new work run-off and troubleshooting existing processes.
Collaboration and Support
Will collaborate with project engineers and production teams on the selection of best-fit methods for manufacture, e.g., routing fixture vs. CNC machining. Perform quality control checks and troubleshoot issues during the machining process. Collaborate on capacity and capability enhancement by reducing setup times and improving fixtures for error proofing.
Continuous Improvement
Participation in continuous improvement activities in programming and CNC machine operations. Stay up to date with advancements in CNC technology and incorporate them into manufacturing processes.
Responsibilities and Tasks
Responsible for selecting cutting tools, calculating speeds and feeds, and optimizing machining processes. Ensure that all safety standards are met during the manufacturing process. Perform repairs on CNC machinery, including replacing worn components and calibrating machines to meet production specifications. Conduct regular inspections and preventive maintenance on CNC machines to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime. Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues utilizing diagnostic equipment to identify problems and implement necessary repairs.
Manufacturing Improvements
Maintain and improve the companys competitive position by identifying, justifying, and implementing manufacturing improvements. Perform make vs. buy analyses and provide related recommendations to management. Create and maintain records, data schedules, and other pertinent information as required.
Lean Activities and Quality Control
Cultivates and supports Lean activities, Cellular Standardization, and Continuous Improvement practices throughout using various tools and methods. Use blueprints and applicable specifications to assist quality with the determination of inspection requirements.
Other Responsibilities
Conducts producibility studies to evaluate production process reliability and provide appropriate recommendations. Assist in justification of new capital equipment and developing future processes that may be required to meet departmental and company goals. Prepares specification of production operations, prepares vendor instructions for operations sourced outside the company, and defines tooling requirements and issuance of tool orders to the Tool Fabrication department.
Qualifications
Associates degree in a related technical field and 5 years related experience or HS diploma and 10 years related experience preferred. Must be able to read complex blueprints, technical drawings, bills of material, assembly instructions, and parts. Ability to use measuring equipment, such as calipers, height gauges, micrometers, etc. Ability to work hands-on within the production environment. Familiar with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a team, collaborative environment. Experience with operating and maintaining CNC machinery, including routine maintenance and repairs. Strong knowledge of CADCAM software. Proficiency in G-code and Macro-B syntax and structure preferred. Basic knowledge in SCL and JavaScript or similar for PLC and post-processor development preferred but not required. Proficiency with CAD software, SolidWorks preferred. ERP systems, Epicor preferred. General office applications, MS Office preferred. CNC programming, PowerMill preferred.
