CNC Programmer Purpose

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented CNC Programmer who is proficient in using Mastercam software for programming CNC machines. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machine setup and troubleshooting with a commitment to teaching precision and efficiency. The role demands a hands-on approach to large-scale component manufacturing and a passion for knowledge-sharing within the team. The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA, and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production operations. Position may require limited travel.

Job Description

Key responsibilities include:

• Develop and optimize CNC programs using Mastercam software for various CNC machines, including 3 to 5 axis milling machines and large part turning centers. • Perform precision setups for CNC operations, ensuring machines are configured to produce parts that meet exact specifications with a special focus on large-scale components. • Troubleshoot and resolve machining or assembly problems in collaboration with engineers and production personnel, with an emphasis on large part turning processes. • Utilize precision measuring devices to ensure the quality and accuracy of machined parts, including those of larger dimensions. • Provide support to machinists by designing tools and fixtures for improved machining processes, particularly for large part turning operations. • Understand and apply knowledge of speeds and feeds of tools to optimize manufacturing cycle time and improve overall efficiency, especially for large-scale turning operations. • Maintain clear and accurate records of CNC operations, program modifications, and machine maintenance schedules, with additional attention to large part turning procedures. • Complete quality control tests during the manufacturing stage and on the final product. • Clean and maintain shop equipment and machinery.

Qualifications

Must have at least 5 years of experience in CNC programming and machining, with specific experience in large part setup, milling, and horizontal turning. Must have experience as a CNC Programmer with expertise in Mastercam software. Must have a strong understanding of metalworking and manufacturing techniques, with experience in 5-Axis machining being a plus. Must be proficient in reading and interpreting engineering plans, blueprints, orthographic drawings, and be familiar with geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T). Must have excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Must have good communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members and other departments.

Preferred Qualifications

Manual machining experience is highly preferred. Technical degree or certification in CNC programming, machining, or a related field is preferred.

Travel Requirements

Minimal Travel: 10 or less.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs. Able to perform other duties as required, which may involve high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment. While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk, and sit, use hands or fingers, handle or feel, talk, and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb, and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist, and crawl. Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times, you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation. Frequent use of respirator. Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
