Senior CNC Programmer – Multi-Axis Milling & Lathe
Job Type: Full-time
Location: Elk Grove Village, IL
Work Location: On-site only
About the Role
Confidential AS9100-certified precision machining job shop is seeking a skilled Senior CNC Programmer to support complex, high-mix, tight-tolerance machining in a build-to-print environment.
This role is focused primarily on 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis milling, with the ability to also program basic CNC lathe work. We are looking for someone who can create reliable, efficient, and repeatable programs for modern Fanuc- and Heidenhain-controlled equipment, while understanding the realities of the shop floor — not just CAM output.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to work with modern fixturing techniques, advanced tooling strategies, and emerging AI-assisted programming tools. The right candidate will have the freedom and budget to recommend and implement improved workholding, tooling, and programming technology where it adds value.
Responsibilities
• Program 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis milling using Mastercam and/or Fusion 360
• Program basic CNC lathe operations
• Develop practical machining strategies using 3+2 and simultaneous 5-axis methods where appropriate
• Create efficient, repeatable processes that balance quality, cycle time, tool life, and process stability
• Build clean, organized, shop-ready programs with strong supporting documentation
• Create setup sheets, tool lists, operation notes, and critical machining callouts
• Work closely with setup personnel, machinists, and inspection to support prove-outs and improve first-pass success
• Troubleshoot issues related to clearance, holder interference, tool reach, chatter, chip evacuation, workholding, and repeatability
• Apply and help improve modern fixturing and workholding methods
• Evaluate and recommend improved tooling, holders, workholding systems, and AI-supported programming workflows
• Maintain strong revision awareness and program release discipline in an AS9100-controlled environment
Qualifications
• Strong experience programming 4-axis milling required
• 5-axis programming and machining experience strongly preferred
• Ability to program basic CNC lathe work
• Proficiency in Mastercam and/or Fusion 360
• Experience working with Fanuc and/or Heidenhain-controlled machines
• Strong blueprint reading and GD&T skills
• Strong understanding of build-to-print machining discipline
• Ability to create clear setup documentation machinists can run without guesswork
• Practical understanding of shop-floor constraints including workholding, clearance, tool stickout, chatter control, chip evacuation, and tolerance repeatability
• Strong interest in process improvement through modern tooling, fixturing, and programming methods
Preferred
• Experience in an AS9100, aerospace, defense, or other tight-tolerance machining environment
• Experience programming complex parts in a high-mix job shop
• Familiarity with machine-specific output and process considerations for Fanuc and Heidenhain environments
