Job Title: CNC Setup Operator (1st & 2nd Shift)

Reports To: Manufacturing Supervisor / CNC Manager

Role Purpose

The CNC Setup Operator is responsible for setting up and supporting CNC machining operations involving 3, 4, and 5-axis machining centers to ensure efficient production of precision machined components in accordance with engineering drawings, customer requirements, and quality standards. This position plays a critical role in supporting production efficiency, tooling readiness, process accuracy, and continuous improvement initiatives within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Scope & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Set up CNC milling and/or turning machines for production operations
Review routers, setup sheets, blueprints, and engineering drawings to confirm correct revision levels and machining requirements
Establish stable and repeatable machine setups for operators and machinists to follow
Verify tooling, fixtures, offsets, and machine readiness prior to production runs
Validate and maintain expected cycle times and daily production goals
Monitor and maintain scrap levels within company standards
Complete and verify IPIC charts and in-process inspection documentation
Ensure adequate tooling and backup tooling availability for scheduled jobs
Support organization and cleanliness of work areas in alignment with 5S initiatives
Collaborate closely with CNC programmers, machinists, and operations personnel to support production efficiency and quality
Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, and specifications
Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and related tools
Continually inspect and document machined dimensions to ensure conformance to customer and engineering requirements
Adjust machine offsets and CNC programs as necessary to maintain dimensional accuracy
Assist operators and machinists with job setups, tooling preparation, and troubleshooting
Line up programs, fixturing, and tooling for upcoming production jobs
Design or recommend work holding solutions and special tooling for complex machining applications
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
Follow all company safety policies, quality standards, and manufacturing procedures
Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs

Work Experience & Skills

Education

High school diploma or GED required
Technical certification or vocational training in CNC machining or manufacturing technology preferred

Experience

Minimum 5 years of experience setting up CNC machining centers required
Experience with 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining operations required
Aerospace or precision manufacturing experience strongly preferred
Experience working in AS9100-regulated manufacturing environments preferred

Skills / Knowledge

Strong knowledge of CNC machining practices, setups, and troubleshooting
Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications
Experience using precision inspection equipment such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and related measuring instruments
Familiarity with CNC programming adjustments and setup optimization
Experience with Mastercam or similar CAM software preferred
Knowledge of tooling, fixturing, work holding, and machining processes
Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality
Effective communication and teamwork skills
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Working Conditions

Manufacturing floor environment with exposure to moving machinery, noise, metal shavings, lubricants, and dust
Frequent standing, walking, and interaction with machining equipment
Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toe footwear as applicable

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach with hands and arms throughout the workday
Ability to lift and/or move objects up to 30 pounds occasionally
Frequent use of hands for operating machinery, tooling, and inspection equipment
Visual acuity, with or without correction, required for detailed inspection and machine setup activities
