CNC Swiss Lathe Programmer / Machinist

Talent Responsibilities

A CNC Swiss Lathe Programmer Machinist is responsible for reading, editing, and optimizing CNC programs using G-code and M-code. They set up and configure essential tooling, including collets, guide bushings, bar feeders, and work holding devices, and operate, program, and troubleshoot Star CNC Swiss lathes, specifically models SW-12ll, SR-20Jll Type B, and SR-32Jlll Type B. The role involves inspecting parts using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, comparators, and drop gages, while interpreting blueprints, drawings, tolerances, and inspection requirements to ensure quality and accuracy. Additionally, the machinist troubleshoots common machining issues like tool wear, chatter, burrs, dimensional inaccuracies, and cycle time inefficiencies, making adjustments as needed. They maintain a safe and organized workspace, adhering to safety protocols while keeping machines, tooling, and work areas in optimal condition

  • Set up, program, operate, and troubleshoot Star CNC Swiss lathes
  • Work with Star models including:
  • SW-12ll
  • SR-20Jll Type B
  • SR-32Jlll Type B
  • Read and edit CNC programs using G-code and M-code
  • Create, modify, and improve CNC programs
  • Use TopSolid software to support programming and process improvement
  • Set up tooling, collets, guide bushings, bar feeders, and workholding
  • Perform offsets, tool changes, program edits, and machine adjustments
  • Troubleshoot machining issues such as tool wear, chatter, burrs, dimensional issues, and cycle time problems
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, tolerances, and inspection requirements
  • Use measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, comparators, and drop gages
  • Inspect parts and make adjustments to maintain quality
  • Work safely and keep machines, tooling, and work areas organized

Talent Profile

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Technical degree, vocational certification, or trade school training in CNC machining or a related field preferred

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience with Star CNC Swiss lathes
  • Experience using precision inspection tools
  • Experience with Star machines such as SW-12, SR-20, SR-32, or similar Swiss-type lathes
  • Strong understanding of G-code and M-code

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Experience with TopSolid CAM, Mastercam, or SolidWorks CAM
  • Machining stainless steel, aluminium, copper, brass, or similar materials
  • Knowledge on improving cycle times and reducing scrap
  • Strong knowledge of CNC Swiss tooling, guide bushings, collets, and bar feeders
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, work instructions and specifications

Physical/Mental Abilities

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials, tooling, fixtures, and equipment weighing up to 50lbs
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during an 8 hour or longer shift
  • Regularly bend, reach, kneel, crouch, and move around CNC machines and production equipment
  • Safely load and unload bar stock, raw materials, finished components, tooling, and machine accessories
  • Work safely around moving machinery, metal chips, coolant, lubricants, oils, noise, and normal manufacturing floor conditions
  • Maintain concentration and attention to detail while setting up, programming, operating, and monitoring CNC equipment
  • Ability to communicate with supervisors, operators, engineers, quality personnel, and other departments
