    Description

    Position Summary

The CNC VTL Machinist is a skilled, experienced operator responsible for the setup, operation, and quality verification of large-diameter CNC vertical turret lathes. This role supports second-shift execution of precision turned components for aerospace, defense, and industrial customers. The right candidate brings deep vertical turning experience, the ability to set up jobs independently, and the discipline to hold tight tolerances on complex, high-value parts with minimal supervision.

    Essential Responsibilities

    • Set up and operate CNC vertical turret lathes to produce large-diameter precision components from engineering drawings, routers, and work orders
    • Select and install tooling, inserts, fixtures, and workholding equipment appropriate to the job
    • Perform in-process and final inspection using precision measurement tools (micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and CMM where applicable)
    • Read and interpret GD&T, blueprints, and shop travelers with accuracy
    • Monitor feeds, speeds, and tool wear; make offsets and adjustments to maintain tolerances on large, complex parts
    • Identify and resolve machine alarms, tooling issues, and surface condition problems independently
    • Maintain accurate production records, first-article documentation, and non-conformance reports as required
    • Follow all safety, quality, and housekeeping standards; support 5S on the shop floor
    • Collaborate with day-shift operators and production management to ensure smooth shift transitions and workload continuity
    • Participate in cross-training and knowledge transfer activities as the operation grows

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • 5+ years of hands-on CNC VTL experience with large-diameter workpieces
    • Demonstrated ability to set up jobs independently — not operator-only experience
    • Proficiency reading blueprints and GD&T
    • Experience with precision measurement and inspection on turned components
    • Ability to work second shift consistently

    Preferred:

    • Experience in aerospace, defense, or heavy industrial manufacturing

    • Familiarity with FANUC

    • Exposure to AS9100 or ISO quality management systems

    • Experience machining large, low-volume, high-mix components

    What We Offer

    • Competitive hourly wage commensurate with experience
    • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)
    • A stable, growing company with 70+ years of history and a long-term ownership mindset
    • Investment in your development — we build careers, not just headcounts
