Code Enforcement Inspector
Property Rehabilitation | Building & Safety
 
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Schedule: 4/40 Schedule
Assignment Type: Contract, On Site
Pay Rate:$45.00 to $55.00 per hour
 
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Code Enforcement Inspector to support a municipal Building & Safety Department in Los Angeles. This position focuses on conducting property rehabilitation and code enforcement inspections of residential and commercial properties to ensure compliance with municipal codes, California Building Standards, and public safety regulations.

The ideal candidate has municipal inspection experience, strong knowledge of California building codes, and holds the required active ICC certifications. This role requires excellent communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while maintaining positive relationships with property owners, contractors, and community members.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct field inspections of residential and commercial properties to verify compliance with municipal building codes, zoning regulations, and property rehabilitation standards.
  • Identify code violations involving structural integrity, occupancy requirements, life safety, property maintenance, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Document inspection findings through detailed reports, photographs, and case documentation.
  • Issue notices of violation and explain corrective actions required to achieve compliance.
  • Perform follow-up inspections to verify violations have been corrected within established timelines.
  • Work collaboratively with Building & Safety personnel, code enforcement staff, and other municipal departments to support rehabilitation and compliance initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records, enforcement actions, and case information using departmental tracking systems.
  • Provide professional customer service while communicating code requirements to property owners, contractors, developers, and the public.
  • Interpret construction plans, engineering drawings, specifications, and applicable building codes.
  • Conduct inspections in accordance with municipal ordinances, California Building Standards Codes, and established safety regulations.
 
Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Previous experience as a Code Enforcement Inspector, Building Inspector, Property Rehabilitation Inspector, or in a closely related municipal inspection role.
  • Active ICC certifications in Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical, OR an Active ICC Commercial Combination Inspector Certification.
  • Commercial Combination Inspector credentials are strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of the California Building Standards Codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering plans, specifications, and technical calculations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License.
  • Ability to successfully pass a Live Scan background investigation.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • CASp (Certified Access Specialist) Certification.
  • Experience working for a municipal Building & Safety Department.
  • Experience supporting property rehabilitation or housing compliance programs.
  • Familiarity with code enforcement case management systems and electronic inspection software.
  • Background in construction, building inspection, or municipal code enforcement.
 
Work Environment:
  • Field-based position requiring daily inspections of residential and commercial properties throughout the community.
  • Frequent travel between inspection sites.
  • Regular interaction with contractors, property owners, developers, business owners, and the general public.
