Job Description
Under minimal supervision, provides technical and investigatory work in the enforcement of municipal, state and federal codes including responding to complaints, conducting site visits and abatements; gathering, compiling and maintaining evidence through written, photographic and electronic records; and monitoring progress of compliance. Does related work as required. May serve as lead to other Code Enforcement Officers.
There are two levels for this position, following is the hiring ranges based on experience:
Code Enforcement Officer I: $26.52/hour to $36.47/hour
Code Enforcement Officer II: $28.38/hour to $39.03/hour
The full salary range for all these levels to provide opportunity for growth and development:
Code Enforcement Officer I: 26.52/hour to $46.41/hour
Code Enforcement Officer II: $28.38/hour to $49.67/hour

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education and Experience
Code Enforcement Officer I:
A combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or G.E.D., supplemented by courses in planning and zoning or a related field. Minimum of 1 year experience effectively dealing with the public in code enforcement, law enforcement, engineering, planning and zoning, building inspections or investigations, preferably in local government. Other equivalent education and work experience may be considered in meeting the minimum education and experience requirements.
Code Enforcement Officer II:
A combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or G.E.D., supplemented by courses and in planning and zoning or related field, and 3 to 5 years of experience effectively dealing with the public in code enforcement, law enforcement, engineering, planning and zoning, building inspections or investigations, preferably in local government. Other equivalent education and work experience may be considered in meeting the minimum education and experience requirements.

Do you have experience conducting investigations and enforcing compliance with zoning, property maintenance, building, environmental, or related local government codes and ordinances?

Do you currently possess certifications related to code enforcement such as Property Maintenance Inspector and/or Combination Inspector certifications through the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), Certified Zoning Official (CZO), or Dept. of Environmental Quality Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector certifications?

Have you issued notices of violation, stop work orders or other enforcement documents as part of a code enforcement or regulatory compliance position?
