POSITION OVERVIEW
As a Cold Forming Manufacturing Engineer your roles and responsibilities will include:
The client is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to develop, optimize, and support high-volume metal manufacturing processes across multiple plants and supplier locations. The role focuses on CNC machining, cold forming, cold heading, rolling, extrusion, and secondary operations. This is a highly hands-on position requiring frequent travel to manufacturing sites for process improvement, equipment validation, production launches, and supplier development activities.
Key Responsibilities
Manufacturing Process Engineering
- Develop, optimize, and validate machining and cold forming processes.
- Establish process parameters using DOE, SPC, and process capability studies (Cp/Cpk).
- Analyze material flow, forming loads, tool wear, and machining performance.
- Troubleshoot production issues at domestic and international manufacturing facilities.
Tooling & Equipment
- Specify, design, and qualify dies, punches, rolls, fixtures, and machining tooling.
- Lead tooling validation, machine acceptance testing, and production ramp-ups.
- Work with OEMs and tool shops to commission new equipment.
- Improve tooling life and implement maintenance strategies.
New Product Introduction (NPI)
- Support feasibility reviews and manufacturing process selection.
- Lead pilot builds, PPAP, FAI, and production launches.
- Develop manufacturing documentation and standardized work instructions.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Apply Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies to reduce scrap and downtime.
- Standardize best practices across multiple manufacturing sites.
Materials & Supplier Development
- Partner with suppliers on wire, bar stock, heat treatment, and coating processes.
- Conduct supplier audits and capability assessments.
- Support sourcing decisions and cost-reduction initiatives.
Cross-Functional Support
- Provide technical support to operations, maintenance, and quality teams.
- Train operators and engineers during new launches and process changes.
- Serve as a technical liaison between plants, suppliers, and corporate engineering.
QUALIFICATIONS
Most importantly, you need to be a passionate Cold Forming Manufacturing Engineerwho enjoys his work and is considered to be one of the best within your organization. The ideal Cold Forming Manufacturing Engineer would be someone with deep experience in many (if not all) of the following:
- Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in machining and/or cold forming manufacturing environments.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Cold forming and cold heading processes
- CNC machining
- Metal forming physics
- Tooling and die systems
- Experience supporting multiple manufacturing locations or suppliers.
- Ability to travel 50 75% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications
- High-volume cold heading or progressive forming experience.
- Experience with steels, aluminum alloys, heat treatment, and surface coatings.
- Global supplier or international manufacturing experience.
- Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent certification.
