    Job Description

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Collection Development Librarian selects the physical and digital collections for all ages that are relevant and engaging to the Englewood community with the support of library departments. They are a team player including supporting service points, acting as person-in-charge, promoting materials and services, and engaging with the larger team. The ideal candidate is comfortable with participating in building and refining processes and able to approach work with flexibility and curiosity.

    Reports to: Collection Services Supervisor

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    The listed examples of work are not intended to be all-inclusive.  They may be modified with additions, deletions, or changes as necessary. 

    Operational 70%

    • Selects and purchases library materials for children, young adult, and adult collections in all formats including print, non-print, and digital on an ongoing basis throughout the month.
    • Purchases within monthly budget parameters and shares recommendations for biannual budget allocations.
    • Oversees monthly weeding and deaccession process and completes tasks collaboratively with library staff.
    • Creates and maintains documentation for processes and philosophy to provide transparency and consistency as needed.
    • Meets with subject matter experts in other departments as needed to discuss overlapping priorities.
    • Builds and analyzes reports to identify areas for enhancement and materials for weeding or replacement based on the Collection Development Policy and Marmot consortium guidelines quarterly.
    • Builds and maintains relationships with library vendors through email and scheduled check ins quarterly and serves as the secondary contact.
    • Serves at the backup for other Collection Services processes as the need arises including, but not limited to cataloging, processing, and paying invoices.
    • Serves as person in charge weekly, monitoring use of library spaces, de-escalating incidents, and coordinating responses with security and other managers.
    • Provides staffing support for Circulation, Reference, and Children’s desks as needed.
    • Attends professional development opportunities and applies or shares pertinent information.

    Community 20%

    • Anticipates collection needs by staying current on library and city programming, monitoring trends and consulting professional reviews, publications, and training opportunities.
    • Works with staff on merchandising and display of library materials to facilitate patron access and highlight diversity in the collection monthly.
    • Shares information about new formats, resources, and collection additions to empower staff in promotion quarterly.
    • Collaborates with colleagues to plan training, services, programs, or events.
    • Represents the library at community meetings and events to promote services and resources.  

    Customer Service & Technology 10%

    • Models City of Englewood customer service philosophy and library values in all interactions.
    • Promotes an inclusive and welcoming environment for staff and patrons.
    • Monitors the patron purchase request form and buys materials that are within scope and budget as available from library vendors weekly.
    • Communicates request-based purchase decisions to patrons and staff as they are made.
    • Provides library information, technology assistance, referrals, and reader’s advisory to patrons as requested.
    • Stays up to date on technology utilized inside of the library and specific to the Collection Development office to complete daily operations.

     

    EDUCATION

    Master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA accredited program or completion of a master’s degree in library and information science within six months of hire required.

     

    RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE

    • Required: Two years of progressively responsible experience in a public library setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Preferred: Two years of experience working in library collection development or doing materials selection with vendor provided interfaces.

    • Collection development techniques and policies
    • Technology including library software, databases and digital resources
    • Reference services, research, readers’ advisory and collection development
    • Library ethos including The Library Bill of Rights, Freedom of Information Act, and Ranganathan’s five laws.

    • Ability to assess community needs to develop a responsive and popular collection.

    • Strong organization and time management skills

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Work is performed in a standard library environment, requiring standing for extended periods of time.  Work may also be performed in a standard office environment, requiring sitting for extended periods of time.  Must be able to perform occasional lifting (up to 15 lbs).  Job requires visual and physical capabilities to work on computers and associated equipment for extended periods of time.

    SALARY RANGE

    $59,261.49 - $88,892.34/Annual Salary
