Position Summary

Reporting Authority: Assistant Director of Recruitment and Student Success

To identify, recruit, advise and enroll qualified students for academic and technical programs in accordance with the philosophy and mission of Bishop State Community College as well as assist students with the admission process, program planning, transfer information, course selection and registration. Recruiters must travel weekly in the college service areas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Basic customer service skills to include but not be limited to phone etiquette, assistance with problems, service-related follow up, and caring attitude.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Colleges academic and technical programs and changes which can affect student enrollment.
  • Ability to represent the College in a professional manner at all times, take directions and work independently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively with populations representing diverse backgrounds, life experiences and abilities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and the ability to lift and move materials weighing up to fifty pounds.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to advise students and familiarity with the STARS Program.
  • Ability to use technology effectively for word processing, record-keeping, instructional applications, electronic communication, information and data management.
  • Ability to make oral presentations to individuals, small groups and large audiences.
  • Plan and attend programs at local high schools, colleges and in the community to recruit prospective students.
  • Communicate initial contact and follow-up with prospective students and family members through in-person and/or virtual personal appointments, telephone conversations, and/or written correspondence, not limited to emails.
  • Ability to assist students through the process of recruitment, admissions, financial aid, and advising stages and the overall registration process.
  • Develop in concert with the college community, all printed materials used in recruiting activities.
  • Schedule and host college tours for potential students.
  • Serve on standing committees as assigned.
  • Attend relative conferences, seminars, and professional development workshops.
  • Identify ways to measure the effectiveness of recruiting strategies and events and establish a system of tracking outcomes.
  • Observe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) rules including maintaining the confidentiality of student records.
  • Possess a valid drivers license and be insurable.
  • Join appropriate state, regional, and national student recruiting associations and
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned by the Enrollment Management Specialist, Chief Student Affairs Officer, and/or President.

Salary: ACCS Salary Schedule C3-01 ($42, 824.03-$65,712.32)

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by Bishop State Community College.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in higher education, advising, recruitment, and marketing or related field.

Essential Job Functions: The position will involve in-person and virtual recruitment as well as advising new and returning students. Work is generally performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule. Learned physical skill is required for keyboarding. Frequent walking, standing, or sitting may be required. Working hours may vary and occasional evening or weekend work is required as needed. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.

Other Information:

The Selection Committee will screen all applicants for the position. The Committee will select applicants for in-person interviews which may consist of question/answer session and /or skills assessments. Applicants must adhere to the College's prescribed interview schedule and must travel at their own expense. Sick Leave

All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Up to 10 days a year of professional development leave with pay may be granted by the President.

Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. For more information visit The Retirement Systems of Alabama. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers Retirement System of Alabama.

Tier I - Pays 7.50% monthly. State matches 14.57% (effective 10/01/25)

Health Insurance

PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. The wellness premium applies only to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Hospital Medical Group #14000 plan for non-Medicare eligible active and retired members, non-Medicare-eligible members on LOA or COBRA, and non-Medicare-eligible spouses on active or retired contracts. Refer to the Wellness Program section to learn how you and/or your spouse can receive a wellness premium waiver.

If desired, the employee may elect four options rather than health insurance options to include hospital indemnity, cancer, dental, and vision.

Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:

  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
