Overview COLUMBIA Class Propulsion Systems - Shafting Components - is looking for a highly motivated and dynamic entry-level engineer to lead procurement, design, test, analysis, and manufacture efforts for COLUMBIA Class propulsion shafting components.
Major components include: • Low Speed Coupling (LSC) • Main Thrust Bearing (MTB) • Main Shaft Brake, Lock and Turning Gear (BLTG) • Main Shaft Seal (MSS) system • Main propulsion shaft and waterborne bearings
The D489 shafting teams responsibilities include: • Specification development • Component design • Qualification testing • Analysis • Design disclosures • Component shipboard integration
In addition, the team works with several suppliers to manage component development and provide technical and programmatic support throughout component design, manufacture, test, and delivery.
Job Duties Perform engineering calculations in support of component design disclosures Generate/review engineering drawings and installation procedures Interface with internal Electric Boat support groups Preparation of technical correspondence between Electric Boat and suppliers/customer Review of supplier technical and programmatic submittals
Strong understanding of component and ship specifications Support testing and troubleshooting for components under test Frequent interaction with NAVSEA PMS 397, 05, 08 Customer
Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate should have excellent verbal and written communication skills to allow close communication of technical issues with nuclear NAVY customers, Suppliers, and Electric Boat management.
Frequent travel may be required (20%)
Qualifications Required Qualifications • Bachelor of science in Mechanical Engineering • 0 to 4 years of post-graduate engineering experience • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance through the department of defense
Preferred Experience • In propulsion shafting design • Knowledge of Electric Boat procedures and policies regarding engineering disclosure development • Active DOD Secret Clearance or higher
