Job Description

Project Management | Field Leadership | Estimating & Preconstruction

BGC | G&G is looking for experienced commercial construction professionals with ground-up building experience who are ready to take on greater responsibility and build a long-term career with an established general contractor.

Your background may be in project management, field supervision, estimating/preconstruction, or a combination of these areas. You do not need experience in every discipline.

What matters most is that you understand how commercial buildings get built.

If you can read plans, understand construction sequencing, coordinate subcontractors and trades, recognize problems before they become bigger issues, and take ownership of your work, we would like to talk with you.

Depending on your experience, you may join us as a Project Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, Project Manager, Field Engineer, Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent, Junior Estimator, or Construction Estimator.

Your position, responsibilities, and compensation will be aligned with the experience and level of responsibility you bring to the company.

Build Your Career With an Established Commercial Contractor

BuilderGuru Contracting, Inc. and Gardiner & Gardiner Contracting, LLC. -- BGC | G&G -- serve clients throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia.

Our construction history dates back to 1935, and our team works across a broad range of commercial environments, including:

  • Ground-up commercial construction
  • Multifamily projects
  • Education and medical facilities
  • Restaurants and offices
  • Government projects
  • Design-build and construction management
  • Tenant improvements and renovations
  • Specialty commercial facilities

Projects range from smaller commercial renovations to multimillion-dollar ground-up construction.

We also believe construction can be a long-term career, not simply a series of projects. Multiple members of our team have been with the company for 10, 15, and more than 20 years.

We Build a Tradition of Trust.

Where Your Experience May Fit

We are interested in construction professionals who can contribute in one of three primary areas.

Project Management

If your strength is managing the business and coordination side of construction, your responsibilities may include project setup, buyout, schedules, budgets, cost control, RFIs, submittals, change orders, subcontractor coordination, owner communication, project meetings, punch lists, and closeout.

Experienced Project Managers may take ownership of commercial projects from startup through completion, including financial performance, schedule, client relationships, subcontractor management, and overall project execution.

Developing candidates may work closely with experienced leadership while progressing from Project Engineer or Assistant Project Manager responsibilities into greater project ownership.

Field Leadership & Superintendent

If your strength is building and managing work in the field, you may support or lead daily operations on active commercial jobsites.

Responsibilities may include coordinating subcontractors, manpower, materials, deliveries, inspections, site logistics, safety, quality, field documentation, short-term schedules, and two-week look-aheads.

Experienced Superintendents should be comfortable anticipating upcoming construction needs, keeping trades moving, identifying schedule or coordination problems early, and leading field execution from project startup through final acceptance.

Developing field professionals may be considered for Field Engineer or Assistant Superintendent opportunities with the ability to grow into complete jobsite leadership.

Estimating & Preconstruction

If your strength is understanding the work before construction begins, you may contribute through estimating and preconstruction.

Responsibilities may include reviewing drawings and specifications, performing takeoffs, developing scopes, soliciting and comparing subcontractor pricing, preparing budgets and detailed estimates, attending pre-bid meetings and site visits, identifying scope gaps and constructability concerns, and developing value-engineering options.

Experienced Estimators may independently manage complete commercial bids and multiple active estimates. Developing estimators may work alongside experienced team members while expanding their knowledge of commercial scopes, pricing, takeoffs, and subcontractor markets.

What We Are Looking For

This opportunity is specifically intended for candidates with ground-up commercial building construction experience.

Strong candidates will generally bring:

  • Experience in commercial construction project management, field supervision, estimating, or preconstruction
  • Working knowledge of ground-up commercial building construction
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans, specifications, and related documents
  • Understanding of construction sequencing and subcontractor coordination
  • Strong organization, communication, and follow-through
  • Ability to manage changing priorities in an active construction environment
  • Practical construction problem-solving skills
  • Commitment to safety, quality, professionalism, and accountability
  • Ability to work effectively with subcontractors, vendors, project teams, architects, engineers, owners, and clients
  • A willingness to take ownership rather than simply identify problems
  • Flexibility to work additional hours or occasional weekends when project schedules require it

Candidates whose experience is limited to residential construction without ground-up commercial construction experience will not be considered for this opportunity.

Experience Level

We are open to experienced construction professionals at different stages of their careers.

You may be a developing professional who has built a solid commercial construction foundation and is ready for greater responsibility, or you may be an experienced Project Manager, Superintendent, or Estimator capable of independently owning significant portions of the construction process.

As a general guideline:

  • Developing field candidates should typically have at least 2 years of relevant commercial construction experience.
  • Experienced Superintendents should typically have 5+ years of commercial construction experience and the ability to independently run field operations.
  • Project Management candidates may come from Project Engineer, Construction Coordinator, Assistant Project Manager, or Project Manager backgrounds.
  • Estimating candidates may range from developing professionals with takeoff and plan-reading experience to seasoned estimators capable of independently managing complete commercial bids.

We will evaluate the complete picture: your construction knowledge, project experience, technical ability, judgment, communication skills, and ability to take ownership.

Construction Technology & Certifications

Experience with any of the following is helpful:

  • Procore
  • Sage/Timberline
  • TimberScan
  • Construction estimating software
  • Construction project-management systems
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Office 365
  • OSHA 30
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Commercial construction safety and inspection documentation

You do not need experience with every system or certification listed.

The People Who Succeed Here

The strongest construction professionals don't wait until a problem affects the schedule to start talking about it.

They look ahead.

They understand the drawings, know what trades need next, communicate clearly, maintain good documentation, follow through on commitments, and work with the rest of the project team to keep construction moving.

Whether your primary responsibility is in the office, on the jobsite, or during preconstruction, you should understand that successful commercial construction depends on coordination between estimating, project management, field leadership, subcontractors, vendors, design professionals, clients, and company leadership.

We are looking for people who want to keep developing their construction knowledge, take on increasing responsibility, and become an important part of the company over the long term.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation will be determined by your position, experience, project background, level of responsibility, and ability to contribute independently.

Current compensation ranges include:

Project Management: $85,000-$120,000 per year

Construction Estimating: $60,000-$110,000 per year
