Position Summary

The Commercial Construction Program (CCP) Adjunct Instructor is responsible for the planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. The instructor will teach college students entry-level skills in the building trades. Students will be taught in the classroom, lab, and on job sites to gain competencies for the commercial building industries. Various instructional strategies will be used, including traditional classroom methods, hands-on demonstrations/participation, computer/web-based instruction, and/or various combinations of approaches. The position works to facilitate relationships with industry for advisory input, student internships, and student placement.The Instructor will adhere to the general and adjunct faculty guidelines as specified by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the Drake State Community and Technical College Personnel Handbook.

Salary:Appropriate placement of Local Salary Schedule "L" at $32.46 per contact hour

Salary step placement is based on education and experience per Drake State's practice for awarding salary step credit.

Work Hours: Classes are taught day, evening, and weekends on the Huntsville campus. In addition, multiple forms of distance education are offered.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Commercial Construction Program (CCP) Adjunct Instructor shall perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies established by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.

  • Provide formal instruction and leadership in construction technology as assigned, utilizing NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) curriculum and materials
  • Provide instruction in all areas of commercial building technologies, including estimating, material selection, approved building techniques, design principles, sustainable materials, and basic principles of general contracting
  • Identify and develop curriculum in support of current and emerging program needs
  • Assist with student recruitment and job placement
  • Complete and submit all required NCCER certification/documentation forms in a timely manner as stipulated by the college's NCCER sponsor
  • Demonstrate commitment to the program, division, and total institution by timely attendance and submission of required grades, attendance, or other miscellaneous reports to the administration
  • Devote full time and energy to maximize student-learning outcomes
  • Be role models for learning behavior
  • Include students in all facets of instruction, guidance, and academic association
  • Maintain confidential relationships with respect to student information
  • Respect student thoughts
  • Adhere to student abilities and competencies listed in the institutional syllabi of courses taught
  • Return evaluated student exams and papers in a timely fashion

  • Dismiss classes only with prior approval from the supervisor
  • Retain and submit documentation as requested to support accreditation efforts
  • Perform other work-related responsibilities as assigned by the Division Chair, Assistant Dean for Student Success, Dean of Instruction, and/or the President

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of three years of occupational experience directly related to construction technology
  • Must have or qualify to obtain NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) certification in applicable construction technology areas
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement assigned tasks in an effective and timely manner
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, other faculty, professional/classified staff, supervision, industrial advisory panels, and the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to relate to students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Work involves the setup and operation of potentially hazardous equipment and machinery and the occasional lifting and moving of construction materials requiring lifting at least 50 pounds. Mobility within the classroom, shop area, and campus is required
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, or crouch, and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with the NCCER curriculum and ability to complete the Instructor Certification Training Program
  • Will work with various electric and pneumatic power-driven tools normally associated with the construction program
