Job Summary

The Commercial Generator Technician ensures uninterrupted power for critical commercial facilities by servicing, diagnosing, and repairing large-scale standby and prime power generation systems (10kW to 2MW+). This specialized role requires expert troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical systems in environments such as hospitals, data centers, infrastructure hubs, and industrial manufacturing plants.

Key Responsibilities

• Preventive Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance including fluid/filter changes, cooling system flushes, belt replacements, and battery testing.
• Load Testing: Conduct comprehensive load bank testing to verify system capacity, transient response, and performance under peak facility loads.
• System Diagnostics: Troubleshoot complex AC/DC electrical circuits, digital control panels (Deep Sea, ComAp), electronic governors, and voltage regulators.
• Engine Overhaul & Repair: Diagnose and repair industrial internal combustion engines (diesel, natural gas, propane), fuel injection systems, and emissions equipment.
• Switchgear & ATS: Inspect, test, and service Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) and paralleling distribution switchgear systems.
• Emergency Response: Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotating schedule to resolve emergency power outages and critical equipment failures.
• Compliance & Safety: Ensure all work strictly adheres to NFPA 110 standards, National Electrical Code (NEC), EPA regulations, and OSHA guidelines including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).

Qualifications & Technical Skills

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; graduation from an accredited trade/vocational school in power generation, electrical engineering, or diesel mechanics is highly preferred.
• Experience: Minimum of 3+ years of direct, hands-on experience servicing commercial, industrial, or utility-scale power generation systems.
• Certifications: EGSA (Electrical Generator Systems Association) Journeyman Technician certification is highly preferred. Factory certifications from major brands (Cummins, Caterpillar, Generac Industrial, or Kohler) are a significant asset.
• Electrical Expertise: Deep operational knowledge of single and three-phase electrical systems (120/208V, 277/480V, up to 4160V) along with absolute proficiency reading complex schematics and blueprints.
• Diagnostic Tools: Competence using OEM diagnostic software (Cat ET, Cummins Insite) and precise electrical testing equipment (multimeters, megohmmeters).
• Licensing: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required; Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred.
