CLASSIFICATION TITLE: COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform technical work associated with the installation, maintenance and repair of technology-based systems/services, including communications systems, emergency signaling equipment, electronic systems and related sub-system/components.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. All duties may not be performed in all departments. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Troubleshoots and repairs various types of communications and electronic equipment to component level; determines feasibility of repairing or replacing equipment. Determine placement of faulty equipment for repair or return vendor for credit; makes repairs to vehicles which must remain in services; and removes subassemblies from vehicles for bench repair and reinstallation. Installs, repairs, and maintains two-way radio equipment (mobile, portable, and field/base units), emergency vehicle warning equipment, mobile video recording equipment, multimedia cabling and termination, radio programming (with personal computer), and various electronic devices. Plans, designs and completes installation projects as needed and performs undercover installations as needed. Installs, repair, and maintain two-way radio equipment in 911 Emergency Operation Center. Perform routine maintenance and diagnostics on remote receiver locations throughout the County to maintain radio communications. Monitors and sets microwave transmitter satellite links back to 911 Center. Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, customers, vendors/service representatives, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities. Review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations and maintain an awareness of new technologies, products, trends, and advances in the profession. Reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations and attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate degree in Electronics preferred; supplemented by two (2) years previous experience involving installation, repair, and maintenance of communications electronics, to a component level; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must have a valid FCC General Class Radiotelephone license or approved equivalent. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. Must provide and maintain a personal vehicle to use to conduct official County business which may include after-hours return trips.

Tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in moderate work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (2050 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.

Sensory Requirements:

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades or colors, sounds, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors:

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, or traffic hazards.
