Job Summary

The Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) seeks an experienced communications professional to serve as Communications and Media Specialist. This position supports the Director of Communications in developing and executing GOED's public communications strategy, with a focus on media relations, storytelling, digital content and multimedia production that promotes GOED's mission and Nevada's economic development opportunities.

The ideal candidate is a strong writer and communicator who can move comfortably between a press release, social media campaign, podcast interview, and video content. This position will help GOED tell the stories of Nevada's businesses, entrepreneurs, industries and economic development successes across traditional digital and emerging media.

This position is for a hands-on communicator who enjoys both traditional public relations and creating content that brings an organization's stories to life.

This position will be full-time, non-classified and exempt.

Essential Qualifications

  • College degree in journalism, English, public or community relations, communications or closely related field is preferred;
  • 3 years of professional experience in public relations, communications, journalism, digital media, multimedia production or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Duties

  • Researches and writes press releases, media advisories, and other communication materials under the direction of the Director of Communications;
  • Builds and maintains relationships with members of the news media, including print, television, radio, digital publications, podcasts and other media platforms;
  • Maintains media lists and communication databases and tracks media coverage and communications performance;
  • Oversees and manages GOED Public Records Requests;
  • Oversees and manages GOED's Diversify Nevada Podcast;
  • Works with the Director of Communications to identify compelling stories that showcase Nevada businesses, entrepreneurs, industries, economic development projects and GOED programs;
  • Creates and supports multimedia content, including video, short-form social content, interview, podcasts and other digital storytelling initiatives;
  • Assists with the production of GOED's Annual Report and quarterly newsletters;
  • Serves as backup to the Director of Communications for any digital communication needs concerning GOED's website and/or social media as well as presentations and talking points;
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to adapt messaging for different audiences and platforms;
  • Strong storytelling and media relations skills, including experience working with journalists and developing newsworthy content;
  • Experience creating multimedia content, including video, photography, podcasts, social media and/or digital communications;
  • Experience with video editing and content production software such as Adobe Premier Pro, Creative Cloud, Canva or similar platforms;
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing deadlines and priorities and collaborate effectively with internal and external partners;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and common digital communication tools;
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy and consistency in written and visual communications.
