Primary Purpose:

To assist in the district's overall communications program through effective, professional communications with internal and external audiences and support the Communications Department's day-to-day functions. The Communications Specialist is responsible for the creation of written and photographic content for both the Communications Department and, when needed, other district departments and NISD schools. The Communications Specialist will also assist the Coordinator of Communications and Executive Director of Communications with media relations duties.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in multimedia journalism, radio/television, graphic arts, communications technology or related field (strongly preferred)
  • Previous experience in school public relations, journalism or related field (strongly preferred)
  • Experience in journalistic writing and editing as well as print/electronic communications
  • Experience in photography as well as photo editing
  • Experience in social media management, campaigns and content creation
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Services Suite
  • Experience working in online content management systems
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others
  • Ability to work with others in department and in district on joint projects and initiatives
  • Ability to think independently and solve problems
  • Ability to efficiently manage time and meet deadlines
  • Professional appearance and willingness to attend community events
  • Knowledge of media relations and public relations functions
  • Knowledge of Associated Press Style and grammar
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn ADA standards compliance
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn FERPA and Texas Public Information Act

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Write engaging news and feature stories for the community and staff through district publications, news media and other outlets.
  • Write and/or edit district publications and electronic communications, including but not limited to newsletters, news releases, letters, presentations, social media posts and website posts.
  • Post news stories as well as similar written informational updates and photographs to the district website.
  • Manage or assist in the management of social media pages.
  • Assist in the management of the ParentSquare communications platform and support campuses in the platform's use.
  • Work with district and campus leaders to determine newsworthy events and coordinate written and photographic coverage.
  • Photograph district and campus events and activities.
  • Coordinate written and photographic aspects of events and special projects as needed.
  • Assist the Coordinator of Communications and Executive Director of Communications with media relations as needed.
  • Assist with and support district events as needed. Frequently attend both campus and district events.
  • Follow communications and media trends to innovate communications methods with school district communities.
  • Contribute to the District Improvement Plan and Department Action Plan, as assigned, including creating goals and strategies as well as monitoring end-result effectiveness through metrics and accountability measures.
  • Comply with copyright laws, privacy and public information laws, all district policies, operating procedures, and any other legal requirements as required.
  • Project a positive image of Northwest ISD with a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Maintain active membership in professional organizations.
  • Responsible for completing all other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:
