Position Summary:
The Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for driving membership growth by developing and executing recruitment and community engagement strategies. This role focuses on building relationships and collaborating with prospective members, volunteers, and community partners to increase participation in Girl Scouts.
The Specialist plans and hosts recruitment events, generates and follows up on leads, and cultivates partnerships with schools, educators, faith-based institutions, community organizations, corporations, and local stakeholders. Success in this role requires strong communication skills, the ability to engage and motivate diverse audiences, and consistent follow-through.
This is fast-paced and goal-oriented role that requires managing multiple priorities while collaborating with internal teams to achieve individual and Council-wide goals.
Job Type: Full-Time/Hourly/Non-Exempt
Salary Range: $18-$21/hour
Expected hours: 37.5 hours per week
Location: Onalaska, WI
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement targeted strategies and action plans to achieve youth and adult membership growth goals, using market data, trends, and geographic insights.
- Generate, track, and follow up on new youth and adult leads and referrals to support membership conversion and placement.
- Engage prospective members and families through targeted outreach and relationship-building to generate interest and participation in Girl Scouts.
- Maintain accurate records and utilize data to inform outreach efforts. Prepare a variety of status reports.
- Work with interdepartmental teams to develop innovative techniques and ensure effective delivery of recruitment efforts.
- Design and deliver recruitment events and activities during the times when community members and potential members are available.
- Promote and assist with Council programs, activities, public relations, and fund development endeavors.
- Promote an inclusive environment that reflects Girl Scout values of diversity and belonging.
- Recruit volunteers and assist in the creation of new troops.
- Build and sustain a strong community presence by identifying opportunities for visibility, conducting outreach, engaging partnerships, and participating in local events, including volunteer fairs as assigned.
- Represent Girl Scouts at community organizations, such as the Chamber of Commerce, as needed.
- Works within the established budget, and maintains expenses and receipts as needed.
Education or Experience
- High School Diploma/equivalent required; Associate’s Degree or higher preferred. Degrees in relevant fields such as communications, marketing, sales, recreation, nonprofit management, volunteer management, or social work are highly preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in recruitment, sales, marketing, community relations, youth programming, education, or a related field preferred.
- Other combinations of education and relevant experience that demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position will be considered.
- Exceptional written and verbal communicator.
- Excellent leadership and decision-making skills.
- Ability to actively engage and build rapport with individuals and groups; ability to create and maintain meaningful connections with diverse audiences that support participation and partnership.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and execute work independently. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with attention to detail and follow-through, with a bias towards execution and action.
- Strong work ethic with a high degree of curiosity and a learning orientation; someone who leads and operates with a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and discretion.
- Demonstrated ability and sensitivity working with youth and persons of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience working with cloud-based platforms and Salesforce (or other CRM systems) preferred.
- High capacity to master and leverage data tracking platforms.
- Demonstrated success in building partnerships and persuasively communicating value in a way that drives engagement, participation, and commitment while being aware of and responsive to the needs and concerns of others.
- A proactive team player willing to pitch in at all levels while also holding a big picture, systems thinking mindset.
- Ability to deliver content in an engaging and educational way.
- Experience in public speaking.
- A high degree of curiosity and a learning orientation.
- Experience volunteering or working with community-based or youth-serving organizations; Girl Scout experience strongly preferred but not required.
- Spanish/Bilingual skills a plus.
- Be or become a registered member of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America; have or develop a working knowledge of Girl Scout philosophy and programming, and be committed to the Girl Scout mission.

Other Requirements
- Must be able and willing to frequently work irregular hours, including weeknights and weekends.
- Anticipated time away from office is approximately 50%. The majority of travel is throughout the Council region.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
- Must be able to work both in an office setting and independently off-site.

- Work in an outside environment and the ability to traverse various grades, elevations, and uneven terrain.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds at times.
- Must be able to drive in all conditions.
