    The Austin Housing Authority (AHA) is looking for a highly motivated and detail-oriented Community Health Intern to play a vital role in building meaningful relationships with residents. AHA has been a leader in affordable housing in the City of Austin for more than 85 years. In partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, local government entities, and numerous non-profit agencies, AHA provides access to safe, stable housing to over 20,000 individuals.

    What you will do in this position:

    The Bringing Health Home Community Health Worker (CHW) intern will play a vital role in building meaningful relationships with residents while empowering them and their families to actively engage in their care. Through this experience, you'll gain valuable insights into the community's lived experiences and support residents in navigating health and social services-addressing key social determinants of health (SDoH).

    Key Responsibilities / Learning Objectives

    • Cultural Competence: Act as a culturally competent liaison between residents and healthcare systems by leveraging local knowledge and lived experiences to build trust and reduce systemic gaps.
    • Resource Navigation: Connect AHA PBRA residents and their families with health and social resources, supporting them in taking an active role in managing their health.
    • Data & Systems Support: Assist in creating and maintaining online systems for tracking referrals, resident engagement, and social service utilization.
    • Health Education: Deliver culturally responsive health education and support initiatives aimed at reducing disparities in the AHA community.
    • Community Engagement: Support community health initiatives such as SDoH screenings, vaccine outreach, health promotion events, and service referrals to enhance community resilience and reduce chronic disease risks.
    • General Support: Carry out additional duties as assigned to gain broad exposure to the field of community health work.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED.
    • One (1) prior internship or equivalent experience in a healthcare or community-based service agency setting (e.g., CHW, health educator, outreach worker, or community organizer).

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Completion of one (1) year of college coursework in community health or a related field.
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
    • Familiarity with the local community and awareness of community needs.
    • Understanding of social services and healthcare support systems.
    • Knowledge of cultural humility and competence, HIPAA, and Texas privacy laws.
    • Strong organizational, planning, and relationship-building skills.
    • Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
    • Proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain punctuality.
    • Demonstrated comfort working with diverse populations, including public housing residents and partner agencies.
    • Valid Texas driver's license, clean driving record, and access to a personal vehicle.
    • Bondable.
