Introduction

MWRDs Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.

Eligibility Requirements

Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2026-2027 school year.

Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD. Students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries.

You must be a citizen or national of the United States or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Position Title: Community Initiatives Intern Department: Board of Commissioners Office Location: Main Office Building, 100 East Erie Street, Chicago, IL 60611

Description

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is seeking an intern for the Board of Commissioners' Office. We are looking for a motivated civic-minded individual with a strong work ethic to support the Commissioner in managing office operations and legislative priorities.

This position includes a blend of project coordination, public outreach, and communications, marketing, social media support, and administrative responsibilities. As part of the internship, the intern will have the opportunity to lead a research-based project. The Commissioner will partner with you to create a guide and support this project, providing resources aligned with the mission and goals of both the MWRD and the office.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist in coordinating and planning assigned projects and events. • Conduct policy and legislative research and provide updates. • Support and help lead events. • Represent the Commissioner at various meetings and community events. • Provide support for in-person events within Cook County. • Draft correspondence, reports, and other written materials. • Conduct community outreach, including contacting public officials and preparing communications. • Track and follow up on assignments. • Support general office administrative tasks. • Create social media posts and write captions.

This internship offers hands-on experience in policy, government operations, and civic engagement-an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about public service.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Experience with social media platforms and graphic design tools such as Canva. • Ability to interact comfortably and professionally with the public. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications. • Passion for environmental protection and familiarity with activism in Chicago and Illinois. • Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. • Positive welcoming attitude and comfort working with diverse groups. • Project coordination and marketing/communications experience preferred but not required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience or working knowledge of government. • Awareness of environmental issues affecting MWRD. • Educational Requirements

Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program majoring in communications, environmental science, political science, or related fields.
