About HILOSHILOS is building the first 3D design platform made specifically for footwear-no CAD required. Powered by machine learning, our core geometry engine breaks down barriers between 2D and 3D, design and manufacturing. Our cross-functional team sits at the intersection of footwear and software, combining craft and intelligence to give designers a second brain and third hand. We're here to amplify human impact in real-world creation-and we believe the tools should be just as inspiring as the work they enable.Role OverviewWe''re seeking a Computational Geometry Engineering Fellow to join our Product team and advance the geometry foundations of our platform. This fellowship role offers the unique opportunity to translate cutting-edge research into production systems that will power the next generation of footwear design tools. You''ll work at the intersection of computational geometry research and practical engineering, developing algorithms that solve real manufacturing challenges while maintaining the creative freedom designers need. This role is perfect for someone with strong mathematical and geometry foundations who wants to see their research directly impact how products are designed and manufactured. You''ll collaborate closely with our Platform Engineering team to ensure research prototypes become robust, scalable features that serve our growing platform.ResponsibilitiesMesh Algorithm Research & Development:Research and prototype mesh algorithms for design variation applications on base footwear geometriesCreate robust algorithms that maintain geometric integrity across design transformationsIndependent applied research and development across a range of topics, including:Mesh optimization algorithms to improve computational efficiencyMesh repairUV mapping workflows that preserve design intent throughout modification processesSDF geometry methodsProduction Integration:Collaborate with Platform Engineering to translate research prototypes into production featuresWrite clean, maintainable code that meets production standards and performance requirementsParticipate in code reviews and technical architecture discussionsDocumentation & Knowledge Transfer:Create technical documentation for algorithms and geometric processing capabilitiesContribute to specifications and implementation guides for future engineering workPresent research findings to technical and non-technical stakeholdersCross-Functional Collaboration:Work with Design teams to understand user workflow requirements and design intent preservationCollaborate with AI/ML teams to explore geometry-aware machine learning applicationsQualifications2+ years of hands-on experience with Python programming and scientific computing libraries (NumPy, SciPy, matplotlib)Strong foundation in 3D geometry, mesh processing, and computational algorithms with demonstrated project experienceExperience working with mesh data structures, topology analysis, and geometric operations in production or research contextsSolid knowledge of linear algebra, numerical methods, and optimization techniques with practical application experienceProven problem-solving skills and ability to work independently on open-ended research problemsExcellent technical communication skills for documentation, presentations, and cross-team collaborationAbility to work on-site in Portland for the duration of the fellowship programNice to HaveFamiliarity with 3D graphics pipelines, rendering concepts, and real-time geometry processingOpenCascade Technology (OCCT) experience for CAD-level geometric operations and precision modelingSigned Distance Fields (SDF) knowledge and implementation experience for advanced geometric modelingDomain knowledge in footwear design, manufacturing processes, or fashion technologyComputer graphics research background with published papers, conference presentations, or open-source contributionsExperience with CAD software and understanding of manufacturing constraints in physical product developmentMachine learning applications to geometry processing, mesh analysis, or generative designFamiliarity with cloud computing platforms and distributed geometry processing systemsWhat We OfferCreative, collaborative work environment at the intersection of design and technologyOpportunity to shape the future of footwear design and manufacturing through cutting-edge researchFast-paced startup environment with significant ownership and impact on core platform capabilitiesMentorship from senior engineers and domain experts through structured guidance and project-based learningCompetitive fellowship compensation with potential pathway to full-time conversionBased in Portland''s creative Old Town district with access to a vibrant design and technology community
