Concrete Finisher Apprentice

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Learn and assist with curb and concrete flat finish work.
• Learn to operate track excavators, backhoes, skid loaders, front-end loaders, compressors with air hammers, walk-behind and hand-held concrete saws.
• Learn to operate trucks of varying weight designations.
• Must be able to lift or assist in lifting a minimum of 100 pounds.
• Assist with snow removal operations during the winter.
• Communicate with supervisor on daily job functions and training progress.
• Participate in required training related to equipment operation, concrete work, safety procedures, and department operations.
• Maintain equipment and work area on a daily basis.
• Other work may be assigned; may include assisting other departments.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITY:

• Basic understanding of construction, maintenance, landscaping, or public works operations preferred.
• Ability and willing
• ness to learn concrete installation, finishing, and repair techniques.
• Ability and willingness to learn the safe operation of construction equipment and trucks.
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
• Ability to work independently after training and as part of a team.
• Mechanical aptitude and experience operating equipment, machinery, or vehicles preferred but not required.
• Ability to learn the use of laser levels and other construction-related tools and equipment.
• Ability to read and write.
• Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools & maintenance equipment for an entire shift.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to measurements, elevations, and grades.
• Commitment to following safety rules, traffic regulations, and departmental policies.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Prior experience in concrete work, finishing, flat work, construction or related field is helpful but not required.

A willingness to learn concrete finishing techniques, equipment operations, and department procedures is essential.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Class A Commercial Driver's License preferred. Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 60 working days of successfully completing required training and/or as determined by departmental needs.

EQUIPMENT:

Back-hoe, skid loader, front-end loader, trucks ranging from pick-ups to semi-tractor/trailer. Specialized processing equipment, air hammer, hand tools and all safety equipment. All Street/Sewer maintenance and construction equipment.

The work requires frequent physical activity, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy materials, tools, and equipment. Employees must be able to safely lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, climb into and out of trucks and equipment, work in awkward positions, and perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods. The position also requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, and working on uneven terrain.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily outdoors and requires exposure to a variety of environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, precipitation, wind, and other adverse weather conditions. Employees may be exposed to mud, dust, bio-solids, compost, snow, and uneven or unstable terrain. The position may involve contact with oils, grease, solvents, fuel, and other potentially hazardous substances. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn and all safety procedures followed. This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with City policy and applicable regulations.
