JOB SUMMARY

The incumbent under the guidance of the Street Construction Supervisor, builds and sets up concrete forms to pour, lay and finish concrete. This position also occasionally operates construction and maintenance equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. All other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or department director.

• Place and finish concrete.
• Assist with the construction of concrete forms to include sidewalks, curb, gutter, inlets and junction boxes, box culverts, etc.
• Operate chainsaw, concrete saw, and jack hammer as required.
• Assist shooting grade.
• Drive department truck as necessary.
• Clean and maintain tools and equipment used on the job site.
• Participate in inclement weather response activities, including snow/ice pretreatment and removal, storm debris cleanup, flood response and cleanup, etc.
• Perform brush and tree trimming and removal as necessary.
• Build fences as assigned.
• Construct barricades as assigned.
• Place barricades to control and direct traffic if needed.
• Lay and shovel asphalt as required.
• Subject to call-outs after hours.
• Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• One (1) year of experience working with concrete and operating construction equipment.
• Valid Class D driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

• A Class "B" CDL is preferred.
• Three (3) plus years of experience working with concrete and operating construction equipment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Problem solving, speed and accuracy are required to perform the duties of this position.

POSITION DESIGNATIONS

This position is designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely.

This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties.

This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random DOT drug and alcohol screenings and/or non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings (a safety/security sensitive position is one in which a momentary lapse in attention may result in injury or death of another person).

Highly repetitive type of work which requires somewhat diversified physical demands of the employee. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, walk, talk and hear. Occasionally sit and use hands to handle objects. The incumbent must regularly stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and reach with hands and arms. The employee is also required to use the sense of small on a regular basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance, and peripheral vision.

The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to an outside working environment, wherein there are extremely disagreeable working conditions most of the time and is required to work near moving mechanical parts. The incumbent is also exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals as well as hot weather and related extreme heat.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
