Shenandoah University’s Office of Admissions is accepting applications for a Conservatory Admissions Counselor This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.

TheConservatoryAdmissionsCounselormanagesallactivitiesnecessarytorecruitstudents,withinadesignatedterritory,toShenandoahUniversityinordertomeetindividualandteamenrollmentgoals. Counselorsmusthaveoracquiresubstantialknowledgeabouttheirterritory,exercisediscretionandindependentjudgmentindevelopingrecruitmentstrategiesfortheirdesignatedterritoriesandprovideahighqualityofservicetoprospectivestudentsandfamiliesthroughouttherecruitment,applicationand acceptance/enrollmentprocesses.

The admissions counselor will often be the prospective student’s first contact with the university andmustrecognizetheimportanceofbuildingarelationshipbasedontheprofessional,correct,andtimelyexchangeofinformation.Theadmissionscounselorisalsoaliaisonbetweenprospectivefamiliesandthefaculty and staff of other university departments. In this role, the admissions counselor will beresponsibleforgeneralrecruitmentofallacademicprograms,butthecounselorwillprimarilyworkwithFirst-YearandTransferstudentsapplyingtoShenandoahConservatory’sMusic,Theatre,andDanceperformingartsprograms.Theabilityandwillingnesstoworkamongateam,independently,anduntilthe task is completed successfully, is essential.

Primary responsibilities:

  1. Working collaboratively as a member of the First-Year Recruitment team, admissionscounselorswillbeexpectedtoutilizepastandcurrentdatatoanalyzetheimpact,progress,andeffectivenessofpriorrecruitmentstrategiesandeventswithintheirdesignatedterritories,andthen exercise their discretion and independent judgment to create, implement and executeindividualrecruitmentstrategiesfortheupcomingseasonwithintheirdesignatedterritories.
  2. Counselorswillproposeandmakeadjustmentstoprioryears’recruitmentstrategiesandeventsschedules,includingdiscontinuing,modifyingorrelocatingpreviouslyheldevents.Counselorsalsowillbeexpectedtodevelopspecialoutreachcampaignsandnewevents,thatwillpiquetheinterestofprospectivestudentsintheterritory(and/ortheirparents).Counselorswillberesponsibleforplanning,implementing,andexecutingtheircampaignsandevents,andselectingwhichhighschoolstovisitandwhichcollegefairstoattend.
  3. Responsible for developing innovative approaches to increase awareness and develop interest among groups within the designated territory. These groups include, but are not limited to, prospective students and families, school counselors and administrators, school and community organizations,privateinstructors,andindependenteducationcounselors. 
  4. Reviewingapplications,andthenexercisingdiscretionandindependentjudgment,includingtheirknowledge of factors contributing to student success, to determine best fit candidates foradmission within their designated territory. Counselors are also responsible for notifying applicantsoftheiradmissiondecisions.

Additionalresponsibilitiesinclude,butarenotlimitedto:

  1. Enthusiastically and professionally representing the university at off-campus recruitment events.
  2. Working in coordination with the Admissions Welcome Center Coordinator, assisting in theplanningandexecutingofcampusvisitsforprospectivestudents,families,andschool/communitygroups.This requires collaborationwith other university departments,most commonlyacademicfaculty,studentlifeorganizations,andathletics.
  3. Givingadmissionspresentationstolargeandsmallgroupsduringdailycampusvisitsandcoordinatedgroupvisits,aswellasprovidingmaincampustoursandspecialtoursofotherbuildings,asneeded.Fullyparticipatinginon-campusrecruitmenteventsthatoccurthroughouttheyear,including,butnotlimitedto,OpenHouses,StudentShadowDays,Interviews, andAuditions.
  4. IndependentlymanagingaseriesofSaturdayVisitsthroughoutthefallandspring,whichwillbedistributedequitablyamongthemembersoftheFreshmenRecruitmentteam.
  5. Maintainingstudentrecordsandcommunicatewithprospectivefamilies.
  6. Coordinating,monitoring,andreportingonprogressof,recruitingprogramstospecialpopulations,suchasPresidentialScholarsprogramandShenandoahConservatory’sperformingartsauditions.
  7. Otherresponsibilitiesanddutiesasassignedbysupervisor(s).


Required Skills

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’sdegreeisrequired
  • AnunderstandingofPerformingArts(Music,Theatre,orDance)andthestudentswhohaveaninterestinthem
  • FamiliaritywithApplecomputersandsoftware,aswellasMicrosoftsoftware,includingWordandExcel
  • Experience with various admissions technologies, including Slate, preferred
  • Attentiontodetails,abilitytoprioritizeandcompletetasks,andmeetdeadlines
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills are essential
  • Excellentcommunicationskills;both oral andwritten
  • Abilitytoadaptto,andutilize,numeroustechnologyapplicationsappropriately
  • Abasicunderstandingofhowtousedatatoaccomplishagoal
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings, weekends and to travel overnight with a scheduleaveraging12-18weeksperyear.Adheringtouniversitypoliciesandproceduresregardingtravelisrequired.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. into and out of a vehicle.
  • Validdriver’slicensewithgooddrivingrecordandabilitytopassadrivingbackgroundcheck.
