Help Muecke Drive Smart Growth Through Accurate Construction Estimating

Muecke is seeking an experienced Construction Estimator to support residential and light commercial construction projects from the initial walkthrough through final subcontractor selection and purchase-order preparation.

This position plays a critical role in Muecke's preconstruction planning, project pricing, scope development, and cost control. The Construction Estimator will review plans and specifications, complete detailed takeoffs, coordinate pricing with subcontractors and suppliers, level competing bids, and prepare accurate proposals for review with owners, architects, and designers.

The ideal candidate understands construction methods, labor and material costs, subcontractor coordination, and the importance of creating complete, clearly documented estimates. This role requires someone who can manage the full estimating process while communicating professionally with clients, design professionals, trade partners, suppliers, company ownership, and project teams.

Key Responsibilities

Project Review and Preconstruction Planning

  • Attend client, owner, architect, and designer meetings both on-site and in the office
  • Participate in project walkthroughs to evaluate site conditions and clarify project requirements
  • Review construction drawings, plans, specifications, scopes of work, and related project documents
  • Identify all trades, subcontractors, suppliers, materials, and labor categories required for each project
  • Support preconstruction planning, budgeting, scheduling, and project forecasting
  • Identify potential scope gaps, cost risks, pricing concerns, and value opportunities during the estimating process

Takeoffs and Estimate Development

  • Prepare detailed construction estimates for Muecke's residential and light commercial projects
  • Complete material, quantity, and trade-specific takeoffs
  • Estimate labor and material costs, including carpentry, painting, and other applicable project work
  • Develop project budgets, cost analyses, pricing proposals, and internal cost projections
  • Write clear, detailed scopes of work for each trade
  • Document estimating assumptions, inclusions, exclusions, allowances, and qualifications
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy throughout the estimating and proposal-development process

Subcontractor and Supplier Coordination

  • Prepare and distribute requests for proposals to subcontractors, suppliers, and material providers
  • Clearly communicate project scope, bidding requirements, deadlines, and supporting documentation
  • Track outstanding proposals and follow up to ensure bids are received on time
  • Respond to RFIs and pricing questions from subcontractors and suppliers
  • Build and maintain productive working relationships with trade partners and material providers
  • Confirm that submitted proposals address the full project scope

Bid Review and Leveling

  • Review subcontractor and supplier bids for accuracy, completeness, and competitiveness
  • Compare pricing, scope coverage, inclusions, exclusions, alternates, and qualifications
  • Level competing bids so proposals can be evaluated on an equivalent basis
  • Identify missing scope, duplicated costs, unclear pricing, and bid discrepancies
  • Work with subcontractors and suppliers to clarify pricing and resolve open questions
  • Support the selection of qualified bidders based on scope, cost, and project requirements

Proposal Presentation and Project Handoff

  • Assemble detailed estimates and pricing proposals for review with Muecke's ownership and leadership
  • Present estimate details to owners, architects, designers, and other project stakeholders
  • Respond to questions regarding pricing, quantities, assumptions, labor, materials, and scope coverage
  • Revise estimates as project requirements, drawings, or pricing information change
  • Participate in project handoff meetings with operations and project management teams
  • Review awarded scope and pricing with selected subcontractors and suppliers
  • Create and distribute purchase orders for approved project work and materials
  • Help ensure estimating information is clearly transferred to the team responsible for project execution

Cost Management and Process Improvement

  • Work directly with Muecke's ownership on pricing strategy, project forecasting, and profitability
  • Monitor labor costs, material pricing, subcontractor pricing, and relevant market conditions
  • Help maintain and improve estimating systems, templates, cost databases, and internal processes
  • Contribute to project profitability through accurate budgeting, complete scopes, and disciplined bid review
  • Provide feedback that improves future estimating, purchasing, and preconstruction practices

Qualifications

  • Experience as a Construction Estimator, Project Estimator, Preconstruction Estimator, or in a similar construction role
  • Knowledge of residential and/or light commercial construction methods, materials, and trade sequencing
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans, specifications, and scopes of work
  • Experience completing construction takeoffs and estimating labor and material costs
  • Understanding of carpentry, painting, and other common construction trades
  • Ability to prepare detailed, trade-specific scopes of work
  • Experience soliciting, reviewing, comparing, and leveling subcontractor and supplier bids
  • Strong understanding of construction costs, budgeting, estimating principles, and proposal development
  • Ability to identify missing scope, unclear pricing, cost risks, and bid discrepancies
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence communicating with owners, clients, architects, designers, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal project teams
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates, bid deadlines, RFIs, and project details simultaneously
  • Strong follow-through and deadline-management skills
  • Detail-oriented approach with a high level of accuracy
  • Proficiency with estimating software, spreadsheets, and construction technology tools

  • Competitive compensation of $25 to $35 per hour, based on experience and demonstrated estimating capabilities
  • Opportunity to work directly with Muecke's ownership and leadership
  • Involvement in a variety of residential and light commercial construction projects
  • Responsibility across the complete estimating and preconstruction process
  • Long-term professional growth and advancement opportunities
